May 1,1997 isn Life Enrichment Center golf tourney is May 21 Area golfers will have a chance to win a weekend golf trip to Myrtle Beach and help a local charity at the same time when they tee off in the ninth annual Life Enrichment Center golf tournament May 21 at River Bend Golf Club. Numerous prizes await the golfers, including the resort weekend, which will be won through a random drawing. Other gifts will be used as door prizes as well as to reward win- ning players, those closest to the hole on all par 3's, and longest drives and putts. Sponsors for the event are Fasco and PPG. The $55 entry fee includes cart, mulligan, prizes, bever- ages and lunch. There will be both women's and men's divi- sions. For more information, to re- ceive an entry form or to regis- ter, call River Bend at 482-4286 or the Life Enrichment Center at 484-0405. Tee times will be as- signed on a first-entered basis. All proceeds will benefit the Life Enrichment Center, an adult day service that has been helping families keep their loved ones in the home and community for more than 16 years. It provides cost-effective, quality day services for adults with physical and mental dis- abilities, including Alzheimer's, mental retardation and frailties associated with aging. COUNTY CHAMP - Kings Mountain's Chad Pearson won the 1600 meter run in last week's County Track meet at Shelby High. Sports Briefs THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD Mountaineers second in county meet; Jones, Houston named most valuable Kings Mountain High's men's track team finished second to Shelby in the annual Cleveland County Meet Tuesday in Shelby. The Lions ran up 110 points to 81 for the Mountaineers. Crest was third with 55 and Burns fourth with 16. Kings Mountain senior Corey Jones was named the Meet's Most Valuable Player. He de- feated previously undefeated Tyler Ashe of Shelby in the 200 meters with a Regional qualify- ing time of 22.27 seconds, and he also dominated the 100 me- ter dash in 10.74 seconds. Kings Mountain senior Jackie Houston was named Most Valuable Player in the female meet. Several Mountaineers contin- ued their outstanding perfor- mances in individual events. Joseph Bell remained unbeaten for the season in the triple jump and long jump. He had his sea- son's best mark in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, sev- en inches. Chad Pearson scored his fourth victory in the 1600 meter run with a season best time of 4:59. Sophomore Harley Price won the pole vault with a jump of nine feet even. Mountaineer golfers win nine-hole match Kings Mountain High's golfers defeated Gaffney and Chesnee in a nine-hole noncon- ference match Tuesday at Kings Mountain Country Club. The Mountaineers turned in a 162 score. Gaffney was second at 173 and Chesnee third at 195. Kings Mountain's Michael Jolly was medalist with an even-par 36. Other KM scores were Will Hendricks 41, Brian Maxey 42, Evan Osteen 43, Hiroki Nishiyama 46, and Chris Speight 54. Old timers baseball May 10 at high school The third annual old-timers baseball game will be played Saturday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at Kings Mountain High School. Rain date is May 17. Blair Williams golf tourney set May 17 The Blair Williams Memorial Golf Tournament for Missions will be held May 17 at 1:30 p.m. at Kings Mountain Country Club. The tournament is a four-man captain's choice format. Golfers may form their own team or participate in a team drawing on the day of the tournament. ‘Entry fee is $35 per person. Checks should be made payable to First Baptist Church - Missions. Businesses and individuals are encourage to sponsor a hole for a $100 donation. Amvets team wins in local youth league Amvets Post 995s’ 9-10 Year old baseball team won two games last week to open the season. Post 995 beat H.T.C. Twister 23-3 Monday. Steven Brown hit a 250-foot home run. Isaac Proctor, Bradley Camp and John Swink had three hits each. Proctor was the winning pitch- er, striking out five batters in two innings. Friday, Amvets beat the Diamond Backs 6-4. Steven Brown hit another 250-foot home run. Isaac Proctor, John Swink and Josh Hendricks were 2-for-3 each. Brown pitched the win, striking out 14. CFL's Alouettes set tryout camp at GWU The Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League will hold a post-draft tryout camp at Gardner-Webb University May 3 The cost is $60 and registra- tion begins at 9:30 a.m. at Hamrick Fieldhouse.
