BROADUS ELAM Broadus Elam, 89, 1011 Brookwood Drive, died June 7, 1997 at White Oak Manor. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Richard Fuller and Sarah Victoria® Roberts Elam, and great-grandson of the late Pastor Philip Ramseur and Mary Barber Elam. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Elam, and a sister, Alice Elam Gamble. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a re- tired paint contractor. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Black McCurdy Elam; daughters, Mary Anne McCurdy Bailey and husband Ronald of Arlington, Texas, and Ruth McCurdy Bellenger and husband Wilson of Birmingham, AL; brother, Philip Ramseur Elam of Mars Hill; sisters, Viola Smith of Bladenboro and Mary Elizabeth Vance of Jacksonville, FL; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will con- ducted by the Rev. John Sloan at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends immediately fol- lowing the service in the parlor of the church. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 786, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. LEROY WOOD KINGS MOUNTAIN - Leroy Wood, 84, 108 Guyton Loop, died June 8, 1997 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Hillard and Suasan Garber Wood. He was a member of Second Baptist Church and was a retired mechanic for the Mecklenburg County Public School Bus Garage in Charlotte. He is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Henderson of Kings Mountain; sons, Clarence Wood and wife Virginia and Marvin Wood, both of Kings Mountain, and Jimmy Wood and wife Barbara of Enterprise, AL; brother, Rufus Wood of Kings Mountain; sister, Maggie Ford of Kings Mountain; 10 grand- children, 10 great-grandchil- dren, and one great-great- grandchild. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Harry Davis and Ray Dinkle at 2° p.m. Wednesday at Harris Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Ralph James Chitwood Sr., 55, 127 McGinnis Street, died June 7, 1997 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Ralph Monroe Chitwood and Mary Elvary Black Chitwood. He was a security guard and a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Blacksburg, SC. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Shirley Childers Chitwood; sons, Mark Chitwood of Kings Mountain - and Jamie Chitwood Jr. of |, Shelby; daughter, Kim Chitwood of Shelby; stepchil- dren, Steve Starnes, Cathy. Starnes, Bobbv Starnes, Ricky Starnes, Writa Martin, Donna Childers, Laura Gunn, Christopher Smith and Sheryl Martin; = brothers, Gettis Chitwood of Gastonia and Roy Chitwood of Kings Mountain; sisters, Jurelle Beaver of Maiden, Mary Wynn of Gastonia, and Barbara Jackson of Kings Mountain; five grand- children, 16 step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild. KMLT comedy opens Friday The Kings Mountain Little warming comedy, "The View From Here," by Margaret Dulaney, Friday and Saturday and again on June 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Woman's Club. Annie Grant has the lead role as Fern Arbour, a woman who has spent the last six years of her life trapped in her own home by agoraphobia. Heather Foshee portrays Fern's younger sister, who desperately wants a baby but whose husband has just walked out on her. Pat Pearson is Carla, Fern's wacky neighbor, who is addicted to tabloid news, and John Grant plays "Arnold Palmer,"a neigh- bor whose passion for golf is sidetracked when his wife leaves him and his infant daughter to fend for them- selves. Joe Hullender is directing the comedy. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. Kings Mountain Little Theatre is funded in part by a Grassroots Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and is an affiliate member of the Cleveland County Arts Council. The play is presented by spe- cial arrangement with Samuel French Inc. For Little Theater-goers who missed "Same Time Next Year" earlier this season, Susan and Jim Champion will reprise their roles as Doris and George for a dinner theatre at the Woman's Club Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19. The event, co-hosted by the Little Theatre and Woman's Club, will include a reception on both evening at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The rnenu will include marinated pork roast, corn pudding, herbed spinach casserole and mou ntain apple salad. The purpose of the sympo- sium is to educate the medical community about the devastat- ing effects of scleroderma, lu- pus, and other mixed connec- tive tissue diseases, as well as demonstrate its prevalence in the area.
