~l aaron — a —————— tne , Shelby. : June 26,1997 I THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD Plantain products Ba ee —— ordered off shelves The Food and Drug Administration has taken di- etary supplement products con- taining Plantain off the shelves of local herb stores. Plantain is a perennial weed that is usually found growing beside poison ivy and the leaf is typically used externally for treatment of poison ivy. It is al- so used in tea. : Herb shops who have pur- chased the tea products have been told that the FDA has de- tected Digitalis in a sample of raw material labeled Plantain that has been used by various manufacturers as an ingredient in making dietary supplement products. The product has been recalled and consumers are warned to read the label on any dietary supplements to see if Plantain is listed as an ingredi- ent. The product was believed to have been contaminated with Digitalis Lanata, commonly called Woolly Foxglove. "Read the label and if Plantain is listed as an ingredi- ent don't consume," said Ma C. Lewis of the Federal Food and Drug Administration of Raleigh. Digitalis contains powerful heart stimulants that can cause life-threatening heart reactions including cardiac arrest.
