MRS. JEFFREY LEE KALE
(Julie Suzanne Crotts)
Crotts-Kale
Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby was the set-
ting Saturday for the 6 p.m. wedding uniting Julie
Suzanne Crotts and Jeffrey Lee Kale.
The Rev. Erwin Mendel Stalvey, Sr. of
Bennettsville, SC, great uncle of the bride, offici-
ated the ceremony.
Cleveland Arnold Rayfield, soloist, and Libby
Cecil Alexander, organist, presented the nuptial
music.
The bride was given in marriage by her father.
She wore an elegant Jasmine couture gown of
natural raw silk. The neckline and capped ‘sleeves
were trimmed in bias silk piping. The bodice of
pearl and sequined lace appliques featured a
Basque waistline. Appliques cascaded down the
front, sides and back of the full skirt that extend-
ed into a Chapel train. Lovely bouquets of silk
rosettes enhanced the back waist. Her veil of silk
illusion was held by a cap of silk rosettes with
pearls and sequins. She carried a hand-tied
French garden bouquet of white roses, lilies and
bouvardi. She also carried a handkerchief edged
with the lace and seed pearls from the fabrics
used to fashion her mother's wedding gown.
Mrs. Christy Lail Cook of Boiling Springs was
matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Gena
Kale Hallman of Cherryville, Mrs. Caroline Long
Ruch of Oakridge, Ashley Jean Stalvey, Angel
Christina Stalvey and Kelly Elaine Stalvey, all of
Shelby.

Significant properties, accord-
ing to Eades, include the circa
1916 George Elam Scruggs
House, birthplace of Earl
Scruggs; Broad River Academy,
a circa 1870 frame one-room
school; the Ramseur-Surratt
House, a circa 1830 two-story
brick Federal dwelling located
on Dravo Road; Kings
Mountain's Central School,
which possesses a fine collec-
tion of Queen Anne, Colonial
Revival, Tudor Revival and
minimal traditional architec-
tural styles; the Clarence and
Ellen Plonk Farm, a vast work-
ing farm dating to the early
20th century where hogs are
still slaughtered each fall and
large hams cure in the historic
frame smokehouse. The Waco
Community Building was built
by Roosevelt's National Youth
Administration in 1939-40 and
is a unique structure construct-
ed entirely of rough cut field-

stone. The property is also sig-
nificant because it was one of
the NYA's last projects to be
completed before the United
States’ entry into World War II
in 1941, thus symbolizing the
end of the Great Depression -
and the beginning of the 20th
century's greatest armed con-
flict.
Other outstanding properties
in the county, according to
Eades' research, include the
- Captain Oliver Holland House,
a mid 19th century two-story
house famous for its association
with Miracle Farm Day and
Gardner-Webb University. The
strategy behind Farm Day,
August 21, 1950, was to trans-
form the 182 ares of barren land
into a working farm within 24
hours.Uponcompletion,
Gardner-Webb students would
participate in a work-study pro-
gram at the site. Distinguished
guests atthe momentous event
includes North Carolina
Governor W. Kerr Scott, U. S.
Senator Clyde Hoey and radio
personality Grady Cole.
