| i f § i eres July 17,1997 - ad THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD KMHS soccer practice to begin August 1 with Black-Gold Game Anyone who is a rising 9th through 12th grader who is in- terested in playing J.V. or varsi- ty soccer at Kings Mountain High School this fall is asked to contact the Kings Mountain High School athletic depart- ment at 734-5647. All prospective players must have a physical examination be- fore the first day of practice on August 1. The Mountaineers will have new coaches this year. Head Coach is Kevin Moss, a former Mountaineer football and bas- ketball player who recently graduated from Appalachian State University. Moss was a member of KM's 1990 basket- ball team which won the Southwestern Conference and Western Regionals and played in the State championship game. Moss will be assisted by Stephen Fisher, a former Mountaineer soccer and base- ball player who will be doing his student teaching this fall at Kings Mountain Middle School. Fisher will graduate from Appalachian State in December. Suber, Putnam play. in N.C. State Games Kings Mountain High and American Legion baseball play- ers Hunter Suber and Rusty Putnam recently played in the North Carolina State Games. Suber played in the Junior" and Under State GAmes and pitched two innings in the Gold Medal Game. Putnam played third base in the State Senior Games and bat- ted 454 with 5-for-11 and two runs batted in. : CRKA golf tournament September 10 in Shelby The Cleveland /Rutherford Kidney Association will hold its annual benefit golf tournament Wednesday, September 10 at River Bend Golf Club near Shelby. The format will be a Captain's Choice. Desserts from the CRKA CakeBakers Club will be available and door: prizes will be presented. Fisher won 28 consec- utive games in his high school career and pitched four years at Appalachian State where he set records for most appearances and most saves. : The new coaches said an added highlight of this year's first day of practice will be a Black and Gold game at Davidson Park. At 6:30 that night, parents are invited to meet with the coaches and play- ers. The scrimmage will follow. Players who have completed.all forms will take part in the - Black-Gold game. Games will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday with three. games being played each day. The top four teams will play on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the consolation game and 4 p.m. for the championship game. There will be two brackets with four teams in each bracket - two teams from each state - with the best two teams from each bracket advancing to Sunday's play. LEGION PLAYERS HONORED - These players who have com- pleted their American Legion baseball eligibility received plaques in appreciation of their dedication to the team at the American Legion Post 155 baseball banquet Monday night.
