July 31,1997 , THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD KM bowlers win national championship Kings - Mountain duckpin bowlers dominated the 67th an- nual National Tournament held recently at the Plaza Bowl in ‘RIchmond, VA. : Allen Myers won the men's singles championship and teamed up with RW. Hullender, John Dilling and Chris Hullender to win the quads championship. R.W. Hullender, Chris Hullender and Jack: Barrett won - the triples championship. Myers, making just his sec- ond trip to the National Tournament, won by two pins over William Jenkins to claim the second national champi- onship in three years by a Kings Mountain bowler. Irene Ruley won the women's crown two years ago. ° Myers bowled a 440 scratch, and his 162 handicap gave him a 602 total and the win over William Jenkins. Dilling tied for fifth in singles with a 581 total. Chris Hullender tied for 14th with a 569, Zeke Rybczyk tied for 18th with a 565, and R.W. Hullender was 22nd with a 561. Myers, Dilling, R.W. ‘ Hullender and Chris Hullender outclassed the field in the quads (four-person teams), winning by 105 pins over the Kings Mountain team of Mark Abernathy, Sue Abernathy, . Bumgardner to play in Shen Valley / Taylor Brothers/TIS will be out to make it two Independent Softball Association World Series titles in a row August 8- 10 at Sims Legion Park in Gastonia. Shen Valley, based out of Bridgewater, VA, defeat- ed Sunbelt/Easton of Centerville, GA in last year's fi- nals at Salem, Ore. Sunbelt again is in the eight- team field, playing this year as Sunbelt/Dan Smith /Easton. Sunbelt is matched against ‘ Steele's/Reda of Brook Park, Ohio at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, while Shen Valley plays Sierra/TPS of Reno, Nev., at 7:30. The other two first round pairings send Lighthouse/Worth of Stone Mountain, Ga against Long Haul/TPS of Albertsville, Minn., at 5:30, and Ritch's- Sa esr ito iri/ Tri = Gems/Belooli/ TPS of Windsor Locks, Conn. against SoJern/ Speciality Tank/TPS of Cedarbrook, NJ at 9:30. The double elimination tour- nament, sponsored by Budweiser, Louisville Slugger TPS and Worth Sports, will Colleen Philbeck and Irene Ruley. The winners bowled a four-game total of 2258, and the runners-up bowled 2153. R.W. Hullender led the way for the winners with a 437 se- ries, followed by Myers at 408, Dilling 385 and Chris Hullender 341. Ruley bowled a 346, Mark Abernathy 340, Sue Abernathy 279 and Philbeck 261. have an admission charge of $5 each day. Children under 12 will be admitted free. Games are scheduled for 9 a.m., 10:45, 12:30, 2:15, 4, 5:45, 7:30 and 9:15 on Saturday, with winners bracket final set for 7:30.The loser's bracket final will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, with the champi- onship round set for noon. Ritch's-Superior, a five-time winner between 1991 and 1995, is listed #1 in the TPS Power Ratings for the 1997 season, fol- lowed by Shen Valley, Lighthouse, Sunbelt, Steele's, Long Haul and Sierra. SoJem is 11th. In triples (three-person teams), R.W. Hullender, Chris Hullender and Barrett won with a 1683 total, defeating the sec- ond place team by 29 pins. R.W. Hullender bowled a 417, Chris Hullender 373 and Barrett 338. Chuck Ruley, Mark Abernathy and Zeke Rybczyk finished third with a 1646 total, led by Abernathy with a 385, Rybczyk 335 and Ruley 332. In unisex doubles (two-per- | son teams), Myers and Dilling finished second with a 1128 score. They were 41 pins off the winning mark. Myers bowled a 404 scratch and Dilling had a 394. i - Abernathy and Chuck Ruley finished third with a 1117 as Ruley bowled 395 and Abernathy 323. Dilling and Philbeck finished fifth, Rybczyk and Abernathy tied for sixth, and Irene Ruley and Chris Hullender finished 15th. Approximately 600 bowlers from all across the U.S. compet- ed in the event. Softball World Series Two of the top stars on the Major circuit are area products. Gastonia's Jeff Hall of Sunbelt is leading the on-base percentage with a gaudy .853 mark, while Kings ‘Mountain's Rusty Bumgardner of Shen Valley is second in home runs with 158 and third on the on-base list at 822. Bumgardner had 30 home runs when Shen Valley finished runner-up to Ritch-Superior in the prestigious Smoky Mountain Classic. Another area participant is Gastonia's Gary Lowe, a coach with the Sunbelt team. Sports Briefs Mountaineers to play seven games at home Kings Mountain's Mountaineers will play seven of heir 11 regular season football ames this fall in John Gamble Stadium. Because the turf on its new stadium won't be ready to be played on, David Butler High officials have requested that the September 12 non-conference game, originally scheduled to be played at the new Butler High near Matthews, be moved to Gamble Stadium. Because of the extra game, KMHS has changed the price of its season tickets to $30 which still represents a savings of $5 over individual tickets. With the site switch, the Mountaineers will now_ play their first three and five of their first six games at home. | Fans may purchase season tickets from Sandra Bumgardner at the KMHS main office. Athletes in the seventh and eighth grades may sign up dur- ing their physical education classes. Physicals will be held later in the week. Pop Warner football cheerleader tryouts set Kings Mountain's Optimist " Club-sponsored Pop Warner football'and cheering teams will © begin practice August 1 at 6 p.m. at City Stadium. All boys and girls ages 7-12 interested in playing football or cheerleading are urged to be present at that time. ~All participants must take a birth certificate and pay a $25 registration fee. Soccer black-gold game is Friday night Kings Mountain High's soc- cer team will begin preseason . practice with a Black and Gold ‘Game Friday at 6:30 p.m. at" Davidson Park. All: 9th through 12th grade students who have not yet signed up for soccer may do so by calling the KMHS athletic’ department at 734-5647. All prospective players must have a physical examination be- fore the first day of practice. New coaches Kevin Moss and Stephen Fisher will lead the team through the Black and Gold game. Parents are invited to meet with the coaches and players. The Mountaineers open their regular season at home on September 2 against Crest. “DLA.RE, tournament August 25 in Shelby The seventh annual D.A.R.E. Golf Classic will be held Monday, August 25 at Cleveland Country Club in Shelby. The format is a four-person Captain's Choice with both men's and women's divisions. Women playing on men's teams must use the white tees. - The cost is $50 per person and includes lunch. Door prizes, special contest prizes and prizes to the top teams will be awarded. Registration begins at 12 noon and lunch will be served from 12-1 p.m. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and awards will be presented at 6 p.m. Special contests include clos- est to the pin on holes 3, 11 and 17; longest drive on #8; straight- est drive on #10, and hole-in- one on numbers 3, 11 and 17. Jerry Tessner at the Kings Mountain Police Department. Hullender bowls 423 series Tuesday night R.W. Hullender bowled one of the highest marks of the sea- son Tuesday night in leading the first place Duck Dodgers to a sweep of the Split Makers in Summer Bowling League actin at Dilling Heating. Hullender had single games a’ 151 and 153 and had a three- game set total of 423 as the Duck Dodgers improved their record to’ 40-24. Mark Abernathy led the Split Makers (26-38) with a 118 line and 297 set. In another match, the second. place Ducks R Us (36-28) wept the Holy Rollers (26-38) behind Chuck Ruley's 127 line and 348 . set and Ed Philbeck's 118 line" and 314 set. John Dilling led the Holy Rollers with a 123 line and 325 set, and Betty Hullender added a 108 line and 301 set. Freddy Smith is fifth in Tennessee 100 race . Kings Mountain's Freddy Smith finished fifth and won $$3,900 in the Tennessee 100 HAV-A-TAMPA Dirt Racing Series event Saturday night at Tazewell Speedway. Wendell Wallace won the event'and the $15,850 first place check, and he also cut into Billy Mayer's, National Points lead. With nine races remaining, Moyer has 3,549 points, Wallace 3/473 and Smith 3,328. The HAV-A-TAMPA series kicks into high gear this week with six races scheduled during the first nine days of August. Races are scheduled August 1 in Little Rock, AR, August 2 in Paducah, KY, August 3 in Haubstadt, IN, August 5 in LaSalle, IL, August 6 in Beaver Dam, WI, and August 8-9 in Cedar Lake, WI. ; PREVIEW From 8-A the Raleigh News and Observer, which helps sponsor the event, the Preview is in its sixth year and all profits along with funds from other activities, go into an Educational Foundation to pro- vide scholarships. He said spe- cial activities are being ar- ranged for the event, including a jump by parachuters from the 82nd Airborne at 8 p.m. The scrimmage gets under way at 4 p.m., featuring 3-A Clayton, 1-A Bunn, and 4-As Raleigh Broughton and Raleigh Sanderson.
