Page 10A Local schools receive awards Local schools and educators got top marks from the county board of commissioners Tuesday and were presented engraved plaques. Th e resolutions of appreciation were presented to East, North and West Elementary Schools of Kings Mountain and Washington Elementary School of Math and Science at Waco. ~The schools were recently tapped exemplary schools and * West School was also named a School of Distinction in the re- cent ranking of state exam scores in the ABC's in Public Education. All four schools met expected growth and 84 percent of West Elementary students performed at or above grade level. Local principals accepted the plaques in presentations made by Chairman Jim Crawley and board member Ralph Gilbert. In other business, the board approved budget amendments for the Cleveland County Health Department and Cleveland Center which in- cludes grants, one for $105,000 from the Foundation of Cleveland Regional Medical Center, for funding of two more school based health centers in the county, one at North Shelby and one at Crest Middle. Health Department Director Denese Stallings that the additions bring to eight the number of school based health centers in Cleveland County and the move is a collaborative effort with the health department, Cleveland Center and the hos- pital. The board also accepted a budget amendment from Emergency Management which included a gift of $14,850 from Duke Power for equipment. Lame Ducks leaders in duckpin bowling The Lame Ducks swept the ‘Dead Ducks 8-0 to open a four- game lead after two weeks of action in the mixed duckpin bowling league Tuesday night at Dilling Heating. The Lame Ducks (14-2) got a 133 line and 356 set from team captain R.W. Hullender. Mark Abernathy added a 124-316 and Gail Rybczyk had a 106-302. John Dilling led the Dead Ducks (0-16) with a 126 line and 330 set. In another match, the Lucky Ducks (8-8) defeated the Head Pinners (10-6) 6-2. Mark Midgette led the winners with a 130 line and 357 set, and Zeke Rybczyk led the Head Pinners with a 120-322. Duck Masters leading mixed bowling loop The Duck Masters swept M.R.
