Sos ee a i TT SEA Res September 18,1997 The Kings Mountain Herald JVs lose to Gaffney. Kings Mountain grabbed an early 8-0 lead but Gaffney's strong running attack proved too much in the second half as the Indians came back for a 22-8 victory in junior varsity football action Thursday night at KM's John Gamble Stadium. Following a pass interception by defensive © back Shawn Adams, the Mountaineers drove 45 yards on their first possession to score on a 13- yard touchdown pass from Matt Ash to Jeremy Harris. Ash ran for the two-point conversion. It took the Mountaineers only six plays to score. The big plays along the way were a 27-yard pass from Ash to Antonio McClain, and a nine- ~ yard run by McClain on a fourth-and-five situa- tion which gave KM a first down at the 13. The Mountaineers threatened again on their next possession, driving from the Gaffney 44 to the 12 before penalties set them back. McClain + and Ash each got off first down runs of 12 yards to put the Mounties on the 12, but following a . sack and two penalties they faced a fourth and 22 . at the 27. McClain caught a 13-yard pass from - Ash but was tackled shy of the first down marker. Moments later Gaffney quarterback Fred Littlejohn kept the ball on an option play and rambled 47 yards for the Indians’ first score. A two-point conversion run by Kendrick Lipscomb tied the game at 8-all with 4:37 remaining in the quarter. Lipscomb had a 44-yard touchdown run called back on an illegal procedure penalty late in the third quarter, and on the next play KM's fresh- man defensive lineman Queshon Goode recov- ered a fumble to stop that Gaffney drive. But the Mountaineers were unable to move the ball and had to punt, and on Gaffney's first play following the punt Keyon Girdner got loose on a 70-yard scoring run and Littlejohn passed to Jackie Leach for a two-point conversion to give the Indians a 16-8 lead with 8:41 remaining. A pass interception by the Indians stopped a potential game-tying drive by the Mountaineers late in the fourth quarter, and Gaffney's Lipscomb broke a 40-yard touchdown run with 49.4 seconds remaining to round out the scoring. ' GAME OF THE YEAR - The ‘biggest game of the year (so far) will take place Saturday in Gainesville, FL when defending national ‘champion Florida takes on the Tennessee Volunteers. It will be a home- coming of sorts for UT assistant coach Dan Brooks, a former KMHS head coach, who was an assistant at Florida and then North Carolina before going to Tennessee. (By the way, there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that UT is changing its fight song from "Rocky Top" to "Shine on Harvest Moon.") BOOMER PLUS FOUR - In last week's column I asked if anyone remembered a Kings Mountain High School punter getting off a kick longer than 64 yards to give me a call. I was re- minded that Brian LeFevers had a 68-yard punt against Burns in 1994, the year the Bulldogs won the state championship. LeFevers' field goal early in the game gave the Mountaineers a --3-0-lead over the Bulldogs but they came back to win 19-3. That same year, LeFevers got off a 63-yard punt against Crest which won the 4A state cham- pionship. : PICKIN AND GRINNIN - This week's high school win- ners will be Kings‘Mountain over Shelby, Crest over Ashbrook, South Point over East Gaston, South Mecklenburg over Hunter Huss, West Charlotte over North Mecklenburg, Freedom over Burns, North Gaston over Lincolnton, Charlotte Catholic over Bessemer City, and Cherryville over West Wilkes. (Last week 7-3, season 22-8). This week's ACC winners will be Florida State over Clemson, Army over Duke, Georgia Tech over Wake Forest, North Carolina over Maryland, and N.C. State over Northern ‘Illinois. (Last week 6-0, season 21-3). Ex GAFFN MCCLAIN'ON THE RUN - Kings Mountain ranfing back Antoni McClain (11) gets off a good run against Gaffney in Thursday's junior varsity football game at KM's John Gamble Stadium.
