Tal Obituaries The Kings Mountain Herald September 25,1997 DEBRA HUGHES FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS - Debra J. Hughes, 40, died Friday, September 5, 1997. She was a longtime city edi- tor for the Southwest Times Record and was a member of First Christian Church in Paris. She was the daughter of the late Will Hughes, formerly of Kings Mountain. She is survived by her hus- band, Kenneth McCubbin; mother, Jessie Hughes of Parish; brother, Tony Hughes of Parish; three nephews, Jorge Hughes of Conway, Dr. Juan Smith of Fort Smith; and William Hughes of Hawaii; aunt, Ruby Baker of Kings Mountain; uncle, Ed Campbell of Kings Mountain; numerous cousins of Kings Mountain; and special friends Fred and Coleen Kiser and fam- ily of Kings Mountain. A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 8 at First Christian Church of Fort Smith. The funeral was a 2 p.m. in Roller Chapel. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mount Magazine Girl Scout Council and the Phillip's Cancer Support Group of Fort Smith. JAMES HOFFMAN BESSEMER CITY - James Claude Hoffman, 78, died September 17, 1997 in Nicholasville, KY. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late John A. and Ola McAlister Hoffman and father of the late James Mack Hoffman and Cathy H. Etherton. He was an Army vet- eran of World War II where he served in the 741st Tank Battalion. He was a machinist with Warner-Swasey until he re- tired in 1983. He was a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Georgia P. Hoffman; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim R. and Sherry Hoffman * of Nicholasville, KY, and Don A. and Ann Hoffman of Newnan, GA; sister, Katherine Sarvis of Kings Mountain; eight grand- children, Robyn, Travis and Jimmy R. Hoffman Jr, Jason Porch, Michael and Chad Etherton, Denver and Cole McElwaney; and two great- grandchildren, Kirk and Allyson Brandon. The funeral was held at 2 p-m. Saturday at Mount Beulah . Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the donor's choice or to Mt. HOWARD SCRUGGS SHELBY - Howard Andrew Scruggs, 72, 1832 Kemp Circle, died September 16, 1997 at Hospice at Wendover. A native of Cherokee County, SC, he was the son of the late Kennerd and Samantha Brock Scruggs. He was retired as a truck driver with Sealtest Milk. He is survived by his wife, Louise Anne Allen Scruggs of the home; son and daughter-in- law, Howard L. and Beverly Scruggs of Kings Mountain; step-son and wife, William "Bill" and Era Green of Kings Mountain; daughter and son-in- law, Judy and Steven Davis of Kings Mountain; daughter and son-in-law, Goldie and Paul Setzer of Shelby; daughter, Paulette Queen of Shelby; daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Richard Glenn of Shelby; sisters, Ila Camby of Union Mills and Burina Weaver of Mooresboro; 10 grandchil- dren and six great-grandchil- dren. She was a member of Second Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Keith Dexter Bowen of Kings Mountain; sister, Ethel Murray of Spartanburg, SC; and two -grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Eugene Land and Bob Hope at 11 a.m. Monday at Second Baptist Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
