LOOSE ON LONG PASS PLAY - Kings Mountain's Kendrick Bell(11) is loose on a 54-yard gain after catching a flanker screen pass from Anthony Ash in Friday's Southwestern 3A Conference football game at Burns. This play set up KM's first touchdown, and the Mountaineers rolled to a 28-0 victory. BURNS From 1-B setting up a touchdown by Joseph Bell with 11:29 remain- ing in the half. A bad snap re- sulted in a missed extra point, and KM led 6-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Burns fumbled at the 33 yard line, and on the third play from scrim- mage Joseph Bell took a pitch from Ash and circled left end for another Mountaineer score. Ash faked a hand-off into the line and rolled around right end for a two-point conversion which gave the Mountaineers a 14-0 lead with 10:23 left. "Getting that turnover and getting another score and going up 14-0 was big," said Coach Massey. "Then we allowed them to drive a long drive, but we ‘came up with another turnover to keep them out of the end zone." Massey was referring to a Burns drive which began at their own five yard line and 10 plays later was on the KM 26. The Burns defense held KM to three and out, and Alex Harrill of the Bulldogs broke through to block a KM punt to give the home team possession on the KM 17. But KM's defense was immovable, holding the Bulldogs to minus three yards in four plays. Burns' last opportunity came when an Ash pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and in- tercepted and returned to the KM 18. The Mountaineers, 0-5, travel to R-S Central Thursday for a 7 p-m. contest. Burns grabbed early leads of 7-0 and 14-10 before the Mountaineers came back to grab an 18-14 lead midway of the third quarter. But the Bulldogs got a deflected touch- down pass late in the third peri- od and made it stand up for the victory. mr ~ Burns drove 59 yards late in the first quarter to score on a two-yard run by Randy Brown to take a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs completed a 25-yard pass to John Brown and got a 33-yard run by Addison to set up the score. Kings Mountain got a 33-yard field goal from Brad Bridges with 8:55 left in the half to trim the margin to 7-3. The Mountaineers started the scor- ing drive at their own 40 yard line and drove the ball down field behind the running of Antonio McClain and Dwayne Littlejohn. Burns drove 66 yards and scored on a 12-yard run by Addison to take a 14-3 lead with 5:16 remaining in the half, but Kings Mountain marched right back downfield with a 69- yard scoring drive to cut the margin to 14-10 at intermission. Littlejohn got off a 17-yard run, and quarterback Matt Ash threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jon Houze. Jason Bridges kicked the point-after. The Mountaineers drove 40 yards after a Burns punt to grab an 18-14 lead early in the third period. Ash completed a 14- yard pass to Houze for a first down at the 26, and Littlejohn scored two plays later on a 21- yard run. Ash ran for the point after to put the Mountaineers on top 18-14. Burns took advantage of a personal foul penalty against KM on the ensuing kickoff and drove 40 yards for the winning touchdown, with came when Addison caught a deflected pass and turned it into a 16- yard scoring play. A potential fourth quarter scoring drive by the Mountaineers ended in a pass interception at the Burns 22. Sizemore was joined on the All-Conference team by team- mates Christie Brinkley, @sherian: Coleman and Am Pearson. «| KM Coach Diana Bridges was voted the SWC Coach of the Year. The Lady Mountaineers won the SWC with a 10-0 conference and 16-5 overall record. They wrapped up the confer- ence championship last Tuesday with a hard-fought 4- 15, 9-15, 15-7, 15-12, 15-12 victo- ry over R-S Central. The Lady Hilltoppers could have grabbed a share of the SWC title with a victory. Sizemore did an excellent job setting for the Mountaineers, and Coleman and Brinkley also played outstanding games. Kings Mountain closed out conference play Thursday with a 15-2, 15-9, 15-4 victory over Burns, and the Lady Mountaineers concluded their regular season Saturday with an impressive 15-12, 15-12, 7-15, 15-17, 15-5 victory over defend- ing state 3A champion Fred T.
