NO ee Margrace Road, Kings Mountain, recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Normandy. Petty is one of more than 300 sailors aboard the ship, which departed its homeport of Norfolk, Va., as part of the USs George Washington Battie Group. The battle group is com- prised of eight tactical aircraft squadrons, seven surface com- batants and two submarines, and is replacing the USS John EF Kennedy Battle Group, which has been deployed since April. Petty and fellow crew mem- bers prepared for the deploy- ment by participating in an Atlantic joint task force exercise off the eastern coast of the United States. The exercise in- volved more than 15,000 U.S. forces and tested their ability to respond to situations they may encounter during their six- month deployment. Petty's ship is a multi-mission surface combatant capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces, or operating independently. Petty's ship has weapons and sensors that allow it to effective- ly protect itself and other ves- sels in the battle group from air- craft, surface ships, or submarine attacks. The USS George Washington Battle Group can travel more than 500 miles a day while si- multaneously deploying to sep- arate geographic regions. With Tomahawk cruise missiles, tac- tical aircraft and combat-ready Marines, the forces provide uni- fied commanders with an un- paralleled range of flexible op- tions and capabilities.
