Board to consider recommendations
Kings Mountain Board of
Education members said
Thursday at a special meeting
they would consider recom-
mendations by a Task Force on
minority hiring.
The board will take a look at
employing a full-time Human
Resource person to recruit mi-
norities and implement Project
Teach and career planning pro-
grams at the Middle School.
Valerie Boyd, chairman of
the 13-member study commit-
tee, said Project Teach is a prior-
ity and she's hopeful the pro-
gram can be implemented by
the first of the year.
"Project Teach would enable
us to grow our own teachers by
encouraging students at the
middle school to go to college
and return home to teach in
Kings Mountain," she said in
her presentation.
Goal No. 3 of the Board of
Education is to develop-and im-
plement a plan which aggres-’
sively pursues the recruitment
and employment of qualified
individuals from minority races
for positions in the school sys-
tem which require certification."
Mary Accor, Paul Brintley,
Rev. C. A. Feemster and
Margaret Smith presented the
various goals that the commit-
tee is emphasizing. In addition
to employment of a human re-
sources staff member, they en-
couraged the production of a
quality video and portfolio to
showcase the system and com-
munity; implementation of
Career Day for prospective em-
_ployees; providing resources
for lateral entry employees to
assist them with strategies for
taking and passing the National

Madison Martin
Madison Brooke Martin,
daughter of Kevin and La'Shay
Martin, celebrated her first
birthday September 17. She had
a Barney theme party. The party
included a Barney cake, cup
cakes, ice cream, Barney bal-
loons and party bags for her
friends. Barney also came to the
party to entertain her friends
and family.
Madison Brooke is the grand-
daughter of Evelyn and Bill
Champion and Roger and
Dianne Ross, all of Shelby, and
Linda and Dennis Martin of
Kings Mountain. She is the
great-granddaughter of
Catherine and Oliver Ross of
Gastonia and Helen Sanders

Regional Medical Center,
Shelby.
A native of Cleveland
County, she was the daughter
of the late David Ward. She was
a homemaker.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Jerry Peterson of Kings
Mountain; mother, Ora Gardner
Ward of Mt. Hope, W. Va.; sons,
Billy Bowles of Monroe, David
Bowles of Clover, SC, and
Charles "Sammy" Bowles of
Bessemer City; daughters, Kay
Gunter and Edith Hill of
Bessemer City, Faye Messick of
Kings Mountain, and Audra

children and two great-grand-

The funeral was conducted
by the Revs. Buddy Sizemore
and Barry Philbeck at 2 p.m.
Friday, Nov. 7 at Ollie Harris
Memorial Chapel. Burial was in
Mountain Rest Cemetery.

Lingerfelt Proctor, 79, died
‘October 29, 1997 at Carolina
Care Center in Cherryville.
A native of Gaston County,
she was the daughter of the late
John Frank and Mary Lavada
Queen Lingerfelt, and: wife of
the late Marion J.C. Proctor. She
was a homemaker and a mem-
ber of St. Matthew's Lutheran
Church.
She is survived by her son,
Jerry H. Proctor of Lexington,

1997 at Kings Mountain
Hospital.
A native of Rutledge, TN, he
was the son of the late William
and Myra Evans Harbin Surber,
and was a retired textile
employee. :
He is survived by his broth-
ers, Bill Surber and Jim Surber -
of Kings Mountain; sisters,
Jeanette Heinback of Kings
Mountain, Clara Greenway,
Marilyn Pheagin and Helen
Goode, all of Shelby, and Eldora
Barnette of Charlotte.
The funeral was conducted
by the Rev. W.H. Pheagin at 3
p-m. Sunday at Ollie Harris
Memorial Chapel. Burial was in
Mountain Rest Cemetery.

Virginia Bird Crawford, 86, 202
South Watterson Street, died
November 6, 1997 at White Oak
Manor.
A native of Cleveland .
County, she was the daughter °
of the late William G. and
Rossie Kendrick Bird, and wife
of the late Harold D. Crawford
Sr. She was a charter member of
Kings Mountain Baptist
Church, chairman of the church
history committee, a member of
the Home and Fine Arts Club
and the Town and Country
Garden Club, both of Kings
Mountain. She was a homemak-
er, a public school teacher and
former cafeteria manager at
East Elementary School.
She is survived by her sons,
Harold D. Crawford and
daughter-in-law Judy, and
William B. "Billy" Crawford and
daughter-in-law Glenda, all of
Kings Mountain; daughter, Jane
Crawford of Kings Mountain;
sister-in-law-, Eloise Crawford
of Kings Mountain; grandchil-
dren, Scott Crawford, Lisa
Smith, Amy Davis, Shane
Crawford, and Mark Crawford,
all of Kings Mountain; and four
great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted
by the Rev. Olin Byrum at 3
p-m. Saturday at Kings
Mountain Baptist Church.
Burial was in Mountain Rest
Cemetery.
