The event was attended by a large group of parents, grandparents and friends. Sgt. Lisa Capps, D.A.R.E. offi- cer, led the ceremony and pre- sented the essay winners to the assembly. The essay winners had been kept secret until that time. Amanda Hord was the essay winner from Mrs. Rhoney's class, and Lauren Stallings was the winner from Mrs. Beam's class. Both students were asked to read their essays and did an excellent job. "We at West School would like to thank Sergeant Capps for the excellent job she has done with the D.A.R.E. program and wish her well in the future," said Principal Sherrill Toney. "We will miss her. We. would al- so like to thank the many par- ents who came and supported their children as well as those who threw such a great celebra®* tion afterwards. Thark you par- ents? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all." D.A.R.E. ESSAY WINNERS - West School D.A.R.E. essay win- ners Amanda Hord, left, and Lauren Stallings with Sgt. Lisa Capps INVENTORY With the fall semester over, most Gardner-Webb students have packed their bags and headed home for the holidays. There is, however, a handful of students who will not be going home. Many of the 73 international stu- dents will spend Christmas with family members elsewhere in the U.S., but several will remain on campus. However, they won't be alone. A lady they refer to as "mom" takes them into her home each Christmas Eve. Carolyn McKinney is assistant director of admissions and for 14 years has been recruiting students sofas, loveseats, chairs, and recliners iE a Model #VR508 ; Youre: Choice Wide Screen’ starting at PROV801C 36:1 Zoom Plus™ System 3" LCD Color Display Panel «Electronic Image Stabilization {EIS} Flying Erase Head eAutomatic Head Cleaning System *4 3/8"H, 4 7/8"W, 8 7/8"D + - Broyhill Premier] Joncas] Furniture Company, Inc : A La-Z-Boy’ Company ‘SOFAS NNER Hm [HC «LIVING ROOM AND DEN TABLES LAMPS PICTURES ‘BEDROOM GROUPS DINING ROOM SUITES ‘DINETTE SUITES Model #F35760MB!: Stand Optional : Entire stock, all sizes choose firm or plush Sealy Posturpedic Similar to Illustration Mon-Fri 9:00am-6:00pm Saturday 9:00am - 5:00 pm HOURS — [5 Member Associated [E33 Volume Buyers FAST DELIVERY UARANTEED! 739-5656 909 S. "I started out working with one international student the first year I was here," she said. "This year there are more than 70 and I expect six or seven will spend Christmas with me. I am their first contact with the University and I try to take them under my wing." McKinney even takes the stu- dents to church with her ‘on Sundays. But this time of year she makes a special effort to see that students enjoy Christmas. "I just try to show them that motherly love I know they miss. I hope it is their home away from home. On Christmas Eve we prepare a big meal for them, listen to music from their countries, and just enjoy each other's company." Olaide Agboola, a freshman from Nigeria, will spend his first Christmas away from family mem- bers. He admits he will miss Christmas Nigerian-style: the festi- val-type atmosphere, fireworks, staying up all night and, in particu- lar, his mother who sings carols in Christmas morning. But he is also appreciative of McKinney's efforts. "She really is an international mom. I look for- ward to being in her home." Perhaps it was fate that brought Ola here, but in reviewing the list of colleges from the U.S. Information Services, the name Gardner-Webb jumped out at him, While it didn't prevent him from applying elsewhere, he says Gardner-Webb and McKinney were the first to respond and show the most interest in him. "I came to Gardner-Webb because of how I was received by the Admissions Office and Carolyn." : New courses, program set at Cleveland News from Cleveland Community College: Spring registration: Wednesday, Jan. 7 9 am.-1 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. Call 484-4081 for information.
