For the 1998 tax year, North
Carolina excludes from property
taxes the first $20,000 in appraised
value of a permanent residence
owned and occupied by North
Carolina residents aged 65 or older
whose income does not exceed
$15,000.
This exemption also applies to
residents who are totally or perma-
nently disabled. The exclusion is a
change from the limits of $15,000
tax exemption and $11,000 income
which were in effect the previous
year. In order to receive benefits,
citizens must file an exemption
form with the Cleveland County
Tax Assessor no later than April
15, 1998. ;
Cleveland County has approxi-
mately 47,000 residents that are as-
sessed property taxes each year. Of
that number only 1,168 are current-
ly taking advantage of this exemp-
tion and it is felt the number is low
since 20% of the citizens are over
the age of 60.
