Girls softball
season to open
Kings Mountain High's girls
softball team has been impressive
in early practices and hopes to im-
prove on its third place finish of a
year ago in the Southwestern 3A
Conference.
Coach Susie Hughes has 15 of
her 18 players returning, but with
only two seniors on the roster the
Lady Mountaineers still will be
considered a young team.
"I've been impressed with what
I've seen," says Hughes. "They
have a good attitude. They want to
be the best team they can be.
They've worked hard."
The Mountaineers will compete
in an 8-team scrimmage Saturday
at Crest, and then open regular sea-
son play Tuesday afternoon at
Ashbrook. At Crest, KM will face
Freedom at 11 a.m., Crest at noon,
¢East Rutherford at 3 and North
Gaston at 5.
"I kind of have an idea who's go-
ing to play where, but Saturday
will be an opportunity to see how
we've progressed and will also be a
chance to see some other teams
from our conference," Hughes said.
Although the Mountaineers will
miss all three of last year's seniors,
this year's crop of players include
one senior and six juniors who
were starters last year, and another
senior, pitcher Kim Parker, who
played as a sophomore but sat out
last year.
"I expect some good things from
us,” Hughes said. "We'll get better
and better.”
Centerfielder Amy Pearson is
the only returning senior starter.
Returning juniors are All-
Conference catcher D Chapman,
shortstop Toni Loftin, DH Julie
Robbins, outfielder Emily Ballard,
second baseman Kate Pascoe, and
pitcher Amanda Johnsonbaugh
who has been moved to the infield.
Six sophomores also return in-
cluding outfielders Csherian
Coleman and Tabitha Goode, in-
fielder Ashley Starrett, pitcher
Ashley Wilson, and outfielders
Jennifer Towery and Christie
Worcester.
Four freshmen join the team and
Hughes. said they. bring talent and.a
"good knowledge of the game. They
include infielder Beth Bumgardner,
utility player Laura Propst, infield-
er Anna Ramey and outfielder
Hannah Ware.
"I've been impressed with what
I've seen,” Hughes said. "Once we
open up Tuesday with Ashbrook
there's no more down time practice
for us. We play at least two times a
week, and sometimes three. So
once we start it's 'go' the whole
time."
