Obituaries The Kings Mountain Herald rau ELIZABETH BRATTON SHELBY - Mrs. Elizabeth Short Bratton, 82, 401 North Morgan Street, died June 2, 1998 at White Oak Manor. A Cleveland County native, - she was the daughter of the late James Robert and Mary Ellen Pruett Short and wife of the late Ernest Bratton. She was a mem- ber of Faith Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, and was a re- tired textile worker. She is survived by her sister, Gazzie Denton of Gastonia; niece, Mary Ann Rash of Shelby; nephews, Mike Short, Mearl Valentine, Gerald Valentine and Ernest Valentine; and other nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain. Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. ALLEN DURBIN GROVER - Allen Dwayne "Cooter" Durbin, 37, 3006 Blacksburg Road, died June 1, 1998 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. : A native of York County, SC, he was the son of Clarence Durbin of Shelby and Billie Faye Huskey Durbin of Grover. He was employed by Borders Mobile Home Service and at- tended T.W. Lovelace Memorial Church. He was a race car driv- er at Cherokee Speedway, Gaffney, SC. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Shella Barnes Durbin of the home; daughters, Chole and Amanda Durbin of Spartanburg, SC; brothers, Bobby Durbin of Shelby and Billy Durbin of Gastonia; sister, Deborah Lowery of Clover, SC; and a number of uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. Harris Funeral Home was in Eagle June 4, 1998 Grover man killed when car hits tree A 37-year-old Grover man was killed Monday when the gray Nissan Pulsar he was driv- ing ran off the road and hit a tree head-on. Allen Dwayne Durbin, of 3006 Blacksburg Rd., was trav- eling south on Blacksburg Road below Earl when he ran off the road about 2:45 p.m. N. C. Trooper Gregory Johnson said Ruth Head, of 3052 Blacksburg Rd., was inside her home when Durbin's car struck the tree in her yard. Ms. Head called 911. Johnson said there were no witnesses to the wreck but he said one bystander said he had passed Durbin in Earl a few minutes earlier. He said Durbin was driving fine. Shirley Davis, who also lives near the wreck site, said she thought the 55 m.p.h. speed limit was too high for the road because numerous motorists had run off the road in the curve and into Head's yard. Mountainfest set in Kings Mountain Mountainfest - A Celebration; of Freedom will be held Saturday, July 4 from 2-8 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Walking Track. Vendor space is availble for food and crafts. The cost is $5. Entertainment is also needed. There will be games and rides for the kids.
