Obituaries The Kings Mountain Herald JEFF WELLS MOCKSVILLE - Charles Jefferson "Jeff" Wells, 69, of Marlene Street, died Friday morning at Baptist Hospital af- ter a period of declining health. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Whitney and Sallie Blalock Wells and was a retired educa- “tor He-was assistant principal _. and had taught English at Davie County High School, and later was supervisor of Davie County School Systems. He was Director of Davie County Adult Education Programs and assis- tant School Superintendent. He was instrumental in planning and building the Pavie County Junior High Schools and was named the first principal of North Davie Junior High, retir- ing in 1984. In1984-1985 he became the. director of the Tamassee DAR School in Tamassee, SC. He was -a member and Sunday School teacher at First... Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing tennis, basketball and fishing, and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a former member and secretary to the Mocksville Rotary Club, former Chairman of the Davie County United Way, and helped orga- nize and was president of the Arts Alive in the Park. He was a veteran of the US. Army during, the Korean Conflict. : : He is etirvved by his wife of 37 years, Anne Hogue Wells of the home; daughters, Mrs. Gary Barr of Roxboro, Mrs. Eugene Norman of Hamptonville, and Mrs. Danny -. Bowman of Mocksville; grandchildren, Chris Barney, Adam Barr and Olivia Bowman; three step- grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Lollie McDaniel, Mrs. Nell McSwain and Mrs. Syble Sanders, all of Kings Mountain; brother-in-law, Morris Timms of Kings Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sis- ters, Mrs. Claudie Timms and Mrs. Ruth Randle. The funeral was conducted by Archie Jones and Caroline - Jones at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church. RUTH PUTNAM KINGS MOUNTAIN - Ruth Appleman Putnam, 45, 117 Beech Lane, died June 26, 1998 ‘at her home. i A native of Harnoti County, she was the daughter of the late Hubert Maurice Appleman. She was a textile employee. She is survived by her hus- band, -Rickey Eugene Putnam Sr. of Kings Mountain; mother, Mary Calloway Yarboro of Shelby; sons, Eddie Wayne Grissom of Durham and Billy Pearce Jr. of Princeton; stepsons, Rickey E. A native of Shelby, he was the son of the late William Clemmie and Eva Joy Humphries. He was a Baptist and was a retired textile employee. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Darvin and Macie ~ Page Patterson She was a Baptist and a former textile em- ployee. She is survived by her hus- band, Charles R. Wylie; son and fiancee, Donald Wylie and Mary Ann Hardin of Shelby; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Billy Wilkie of Waco; broth- ers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Tina Patterson and Charles and Geraldine Patterson, all of - Lincolnton; sister and brother- in-law, Joyce and Keith Beam of Clyde; and grandchildren, Jason and Terran Wilkie, Shannon and Brad Sigmon, and Mitzi Wylie and her fiancee, Jose Hernandez. The dean's list is awarded to students who have received a grade point av- erage of between 3.5 and 3.89. 4 P.) ” L RETIRING - Isabelle Ellis, Audrey Webster and Thelma Hicks are retiring from the Nutrition Site at the Kings Mountain Senior Center after long service. ‘Senior Center employees retire Retirement for Thelma Hicks, Audrey Webster : and Isabelle Ellis will get them literally out of the kitchen. The trio work in the Nutrition Site at the Kings Mountain Senior Center and their job is to feed 55 people at noon every day and prepare 34 meals on wheels. "We love our second family here but soon we won't have to punch a time clock and we can .spend more time with our grandchildren and also do some visiting," says Hicks, who has been site manager for 22 years. She plans the menus, or- ders the food, shops and organizes the approxi- mately 25-hour week schedule for herself and her assistants. Hicks, Webster, head cook, and Ellis, assistant ~ cook, report to work at 6:45 a.m. The take-out ~ meals are hot out of the oven and packaged for delivery at 9:30 a.m. At 11 a.m. Hicks introduces - the speaker for the daily program for the Senior Center attendees and then assists her staff in serving luncheon at 11:30 a.m. All three women joined the Center staff after retiring from jobs in industry. Hicks worked at Craftspun Yarns, Webster worked at Spectrum and Ellis worked at Sadie Cotton Mill. "I didn't plan to go back to work but when the nutrition site first opened at the Community Center I was called by Violet Dixon who man- aged the local Employment Security Commission and she twisted my arm," said Hicks. "We've made so many friends that working here at the Senior Center at the Depot is just like being home," she said. Thelma plans to have time to visit the sick and shut-ins of her church, Kings Mountain Baptist, and stay out of the kitchen. When the family comes for dinner she plans to enjoy their cooking. The family includes five children, Lonnie Burgess of Kings Mountain, Marvin Burgess of Blacksburg, SC, Doris Chamblee of Shallotte, Margie Lawrence of King and Steve Hicks of Kings Mountain. There are nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-grand- daughter Kristen Postel. Webster started cooking at the Senior Center 10 years ago. Her peach cobblers, meat loaf and casseroles are favorites with the Center crowd. Webster has six children, Wanda Beaver of Locust, Rufus Webster, Linda Leigh and Claude Webster, all of Kings Mountain, Aileen Horton of Spartanburg, SC and Larry Webster of Grover. There are nine grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren and she is active in Bethlehem Baptist Church. Pound cake is Isabell Ellis' favorite dessert and luncheon crowds return for seconds everytime she serves it. Isabelle joined the cooking staff at Depot Center eight years ago. She has four chil- dren: Jimmy Griffith and Kay Oliver of Kings Mountain, Mary Jane Hunter of Key Largo, Fla. and Diane Duncan of Spartanburg, SC, eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is a member of Second Baptist Church.
