He was a native of York, SC, son of the late John Lowery and Lona White McGill. Affectionately called "Mr. Johnny," he was a partner for many years with the late C. D. Blanton at Kings Mountain Drug Company. A charter member of the Kings Mountain Kiwanis Club, he was the club's treasur- er for many years. He was also the first chairman of the Kings: Mountain Housing Authority and served for 22 years. He also served on the Kings Mountain Hospital Board of Trustees and was a Director for Life of First National Bank in Kings Mountain. He and Lena Ware MeGil were married 64 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by nieces and nephews. The funeral was conducted July 5, 1998 at 2 p.m. at Boyce Memorial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church by his pas- tor, Rev. Doug Petersen. Interment was in Bethany ARP Church Cemetery in Clover, SC. Honorary pallbearers were el- ders of Boyce Memorial ARP Church. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. BETTY SMITH SIMMONS KINGS MOUNTAIN - Betty Smith Simmons, 69, of 227 West Ridge St., died July 6, 1998 at home. A native of Kings Mountain, she was born April 24, 1929 the - daughter of the late McKinley and Bertie Gregory Smith. She was a retired employee of Rausch Industries of Gastonia and the widow of Harold Simmons. Surviving are one son, John T. Rogers of the home; two daugh- ters, Vickie S. Miller of Piedmont, SC and Jean Rogers of Gastonia; one sister, Loretta Smith of Kings Mountain; and one grandchild. The graveside service will be conducted July 9, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Piedmont, SC. Stribling Funeral Home, Duncan, SC, is in charge of ar- rangements. EVERETTE L. PATTERSON KINGS MOUNTAIN - Everette L. Patterson, 76, of 5109 E. Dixon Blvd., died July 3, 1998 at home. : A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Tom and Lee Black Paterson. A retired barber for 30 years with Cleveland Barber Shop, he had also retired from Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. ‘He was a member of David ~ Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher of the Fellowship Class. for many years. LINDA WEBSTER LEIGH KINGS MOUNTAIN - Linda Webster Leigh, 50, of 1506 Phifer Rd., died July 6, 1998 at home. A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of Audrey Aileen Bridges of Kings Mountain and the late Frank Victor Webster. She was the wife of Sam Leigh, a member of First Baptist Church, and an employee of BellSouth of: Charlotte. Surviving, in addition to her husband and mother, are one son, Chad Leigh of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Shelley Leigh of Kings Mountain and Nikki McKinney and husband, Alan McKinney, Dellinger’s Jewel Shop B.F. JOE ROBERT PENLAND KINGS MOUNTAIN - Joe Robert Penland, 86, of 1887 Galway Place, El Cajon, CA, died June 30, 1998 at San Diego Hospice. He was husband of the late Martha Adams Penland and © was retired from the US Navy after 32 years of service. A grad- uate of Annapolis, he was an aviator who flew off carriers. During his career, he was shot down and rescued at sea after sinking an enemy carrier. He was also the first aviator to be- come captain of a ship - the "Lake Champlain” which was also an aircraft carrier. After retirement, he worked for the aerospace industry for 10 years including General Dynamics. He later purchased and operated a dry cleaning business with his son. - He is survived by two sons, Robert Penland of Santa Rosa, CA and Joseph Penland of El Cajon, CA; one sister, Faye Cowan; and three grandchil- dren, Robin Elliott of San Diego and Shannon and Michael Penland of La Mesa, CA. The graveside service will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery with Rev. Don Capell officiating. Sisk-Butler Funeral Home of Bessemer City is in charge of ar- rangements. O.C. KISER KINGS MOUNTAIN - O. C. Kiser, 76, of 210 Cleveland Ave. Apt. 23B, died July 5, 1998 at home. A native of Cherokee County, SC, he was the son of the late Otto Calvin and Thelma Violet Sncad Kiser. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and a retired employee of the City of Kings Mountain. Past President of the Civitan Club in Kings Mountain and the Local Chapter of AARP, he served in the North Carolina National Guard and Air Guard and in the Army Air Corps dur- ing World War II. Surviving are his wife, Lorena Falls Kiser of the home; two sons, Phillip Kiser of Kings Mountain and Daniel Kiser of Grover; one daughter, Sandra Bolick of Kings Mountain; eight grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. The funeral was conducted July 8, 1998 at 2 pm. at Macedonia Baptist’ Church by Rev. David Philbeck and Rev. Edward Brown. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Nora McLurkin of Union County will teach Science at the middle school; Ed Guy, who announced his retirement, will continue in an interim position next year at Parker Street School and Jenny Hollifield will move from Shelby City Schools to East Elementary. WORTHEN from page 1 “Most of the time I just write and ask for materials and I get them free, sometimes I have to pay for postage,” he said. Worthen has set up an office at home and calls it his business for the Lord. “I've moved around to several different churches and helped with building programs,” said Worthen, who was the clerk at East Shelby Church of God and also helped with the building pro- grams at Eighth Street Church of God in Bessemer City and Cherryville Church of God and now he’s active in the renovation program at Grover Church of God. Worthen retired from FMC Lithium five years ago after 231/ 2 years of employment. He and his wife, Ruby, have one son, Roy Keith Falls; one daughter, Lisa Ware of Kings Mountain; and three grandchildren, Christina Falls, a high school senior; Janie Falls, 13, and Brandon Ware, 4. Worthen says county jail ad- ministrator Max E. Blanton has been highly supportive of the jail ministry as has Cleveland County Sheriff Dan Crawford. “We help these folks who get out of jail with a follow up minis- try to help them get back to their families and direct them to agen- cies that can help them with hous- ing and job leads,” he said. Worthen gives God the credit for the ministry. He said one prisoner summed “up the turning point jail and prison ministry in a poem, “God's love is precious, God's love is free, He sent it to us when He died upon that tree.
