This compared to $1.26 earned in the second quarter of 1997, excluding a $.07 per share gain on the sale of a subsidiary. Diluted income per share for the second quarter of 1998 was $1.44. For the first six months ended June 30, diluted operat- ing income per share rose 14.1% to $2.83 from $2.48 in the same period of 1997. During the second quarter of 1998, average loans and leases increased to $5.2 billion, grow- ing at a rate of 8.8% over the second quarter of 1997. Average deposits grew 5.6% to $6.1 bil- lion during the second quarter of 1998, over the year-ago’ quar- ter. Credit quality continued to be outstanding, with net charge-offs equaling .19% of av- erage loans-and reserve cover- age of 3.56 times risk assets.
