Herald/Times addresses parking prob By Alan Hodge Staff Reporter Grover Town Council Monday night focused on traffic and parking problems in the downtown and Town Hall ar- eas. In response to illegal park- ing in handicapped spaces, a motion was made to amend the town parking ordinance so that fines would be payable directly to Grover. City Attorney Mickey Corry explained the North Carolina state law con- cerning handicapped space vio- lation and fines and the Council agreed to defer to those regula- tions. Council members dis- cussed parking lot marking, in- stallation of handicapped space signs, and the placing of con- crete bumpers with iron pins around City Hall. Mayor Max Rollins brought up the subject of vehicles using Grover as a turnaround due to increased traffic from commercial growth across the state line. Mayor Rollins suggested that barrels be strategically placed so that incidents such as the one where a large truck damaged a water line behind City Hall could be avoided. Other business discussed at the meeting included the trans- fer of a 1992 Chevrolet Caprice automobile to the Grover Rural Volunteer Fire Department and Abbey to honor slain alumni In response to requests from alumni and friends, Belmont Abbey College will establish a fund to memorialize Derek Marston ‘95 and Tommi Byrd ‘96, alumni who were murdered August 2 in the mountains of North Carolina. “Many people have already sent donations designating a memorial for Derek and Tommi,” said Dr. Robert A. Preston, president of the College. “We are honored that SO many people want to re- member them, and we are ex- ploring the best way to memori- alize these fine young people.” ~The fund will. be used. either... § .... olpiestablish a sehplagshipipy” | & their names or to build a memo- rial garden near the William Gaston Science Building on campus.
