And that’s true. But one of the Mountaineers’ toughest competitors has been the East Rutherford Cavaliers. Even before school consolida- tion and the creation of East Rutherford High, its predecessor, Forest City, and the Mountaineers had some classic battles. In fact, in the mid-fifties when the Mountaineers were king of Southwestern Conference football, the championship usually came down to the Kings Mountain- Forest City game. In 1955, when the Mountaineers won their first-ever conference championship in football, they tied Forest City 7-7 in a game in which many players from both teams were bruised and banged, and some even treated at hospitals. The two teams were tied for first place at the end of the regular sea- son and met in a special playoff 9 Editor game to determine the conference championship and playoff repre- sentative in the Western N.C. Activities Association. Again, it was a knock-down, drag-out war with Kings Mountain coming out on top19-13. The year before that, it was an unexpected 21-6 loss to Forest City which kept the Mountaineers, who were the preseason favorites, from winning the SWC. In ‘56, when the Mountaineers won the Association crown, they had to first go through Forest City to do it, winning12-7.
