( ra fs : November 19, 1998 Herald/Times Obituaries MILDRED COOK KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mildred Howell Cook, 78, 600 Temple Street, died November 14, 1998 at Wendover Hospice Center. , A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Columbus Mills and Maggie Russ Howell. She was the wife of the late Bynum P. Cook She was also preceeded in death by her daughter Katherine Aileen "Yene" Cook, her brother, Everett Howell, and sister Gladys Howell Lovelace. She was a retired lab analyst from Fiber Industries, Inc. She is survived by son and wife Kenneth E. and Becky Thornburg Cook of Kings Mountain; grandchildren Tracy Lee and Ellen Steen Cook of Jefferson, Alabama, Terrie Anne Cook of Kings Mountain, and Tammy Cook Mann and hus- band John of Weddington; great grandchild Kenneth Tyler Cook of Jefferson, Alabama. The graveside funeral was conducted by Dr. John Sloan and Rev. Ron Caulder at Mountain Rest Cemetery at 11 am Monday, November 16. Pearson and Grace Carswell Allison. he was also preceeded in death by his wife, Ela Joy Pearson, son James Clifford Pearson, daughter Linda R. Champion, and broth- ers Max E. Pearson and Thomas Ned Pearson. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, Shelby, a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of Otis'D. Green Post 155 American Legion, and re- tired from B&B Food Store, Kings Mountain. He is survived by sons Thomas Pearson of Shelby, and Paul Reynolds of Kings Mountain; daughters Regina Dixon of Kings Mountain, Kelly Patton of Gaffney, S.C., and Shelly Silver of Asheville; sister Amy Luckadoo, Shelby; 11 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. Cleveland Ave., Kings Mountain 28086. LAURA WEBB KINGS MOUNTAIN - Laura Elizabeth Webb, infant daugh- ter of Rodney and Jennifer Townsend Webb, died November 10, 1998 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her ‘maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Townsend; maternal great-grandfather, Howard Townsend; maternal great- grandparents, Conley and Libby Hicks; and paternal great-grandfather, Rev. Odes Webb. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Joshua Webb of the home; ma- ternal grandfather, Robert Townsend and wife, Margaret, of Morganton; maternal great- grandmother, Hester Townsend of Lenoir; paternal grandpar- ents, Rev. Charles and Patricia Webb of Kings Mountain; pater- nal great-grandmother, Minnie Webb of Kings Mountain; and paternal great-grandparents, Arnold and Audrey Effler of Kings Mountain. VIRGINIA GRIGG Kings Mountain - Virginia Green Grigg, 82, 716 Sipes Street, White Oak Manor, died November 16, 1998 at White Oak Manor Kings Mountain. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Ovder Randall Green. She was the wife of the late Zeb Grigg. She was also preceeded in death by daughter Joyce DeLillio and son Zeb Grigg, Jr. She was a retired textile employee and attended True Gospel Holiness Church. She is survived by son Earl Grigg of Lincolnton; daughters Kay Guin of Kings Mountain and Jennie Scism of Blacksburg, S.C.; brothers Otis Green and Donald Green of Kings Mountain and Randle Green of Blacksburg; sisters Flow Beverly of Kings Mountain and Margaret Neal of Gastonia; also 12 grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren, and 3 great- great-grandchildren. ROBERT ELMORE SHELBY - Robert Lee Elmore, 48, 587 Pontiac Drive, died November 15, 1998 at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of A.F. Elmore of Hickory and the late Clustea Head Elmore, and step- mother Dorothy Elmore. He was preceeded in death by sis- ters Rachel Bell Powell and Fannie Mae Champion, and brother Donald Ray Elmore. He was an employee of Ellis Lumber and a member of Lawndale Baptist Church. He is survived by brothers AE Elmore, Jr. of Shelby, Roger Dale Elmore of Fallston, and Randy Dale Elmore of Burlington; sisters Shirley McNeely and Marie Scott of Shelby, and Ellen Campo of Lincolnton; step-brother Bill Holland of Morganton; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Danny Owens at Clay- Barnette Chapel at 2 pm Wednesday. Burial was in Community Baptist Church Cemetery. THOMAS PHILLIPS KINGS MOUNTAIN - Thomas "Tom" Phillips, 62, #4 Bennett Drive, died November 16, 1998 at Kings Mountain Hospital. He was a native of Gaston County and the son of the late Roy and Neva Willis Phillips. He was also preceeded in death by sisters Beulah Mitchell and Betty Lefevers. He was an em- ployee of Gossett Machine Works, Gastonia. He is survived by his wife of the home Dean Whitaker Phillips of Kings Mountain; son Danny Phillips of Kings Mountain; daughter and son in law Donna and Ricky Short of Kings Mountain; brothers Bill Phillips, Howard Phillips, Frank Phillips, and Melvin Helms all of Kings Mountain, Lewis Phillips and Jerry Phillips, both of Bessemer City; sisters Louise Roddey of Kings Mountain, Muriel Norwood of Bessemer City, and Ruby Helms of Burlington; also grandchil- dren Amanda Phillips and Charles Thomas Phillips, and great-grandchild Isiah Phillips. A native of San Diego, CA, he was the son of Evan Ridge Evans and Anna vance Peek Evans. He was educated at Mars Hill College, Wake Forest University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member o Phi Delta Kappa. He was an educa- tor for over 40 years. He began his teaching career in Spring Creek and Hot Springs, and lat- er served as a school principal in North Carolina and Florida. He was ordained in 1944 at Mars Hill College through Mars Hill Baptist Church to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. He was a lifetime member of George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association in Alexandria, VA.
