Franklin Blvd. * Gastonia 28052 A Manufactured Home to Fit Every Budget and, Lifestyle Herald/Times Wo o : Tg December 17, 1998 KM native Christopher Still paints late governor’s portrait When the newly commis- « sioned painting of Florida gov- ernor the late Lawton Chiles was unveiled at the Capitol in Tallahassee December 3, view- ers had plenty to look at. Through a wide variety of sym- bols, the multi-faceted art work that was shown reflected the Governor's colorful political and personal life in a way that went beyond mere portraiture. The artist who created Chiles’ portrait is Kings Mountain na- tive Christopher Still, son of Dr. and Mrs. John Still and grand- son of the late former Kings Mountain mayor Mr. and Mrs. Garland E. Still. Now living in Tarpon Springs, Florida, Still brought plenty of experience to his Lawton labors. Just a few of the prestigious places that dis- play Stills’ work are the Schiele Museum in Gastonia, the White House, the ‘Smithsonian Institution, and several foreign lands including Japan. Combining his artistic talents with a bit of wry humor, Still's work is a montage of flashbacks that tell Chiles’ story. At least a dozen different images that go all the way back to the Governor's log cabin begin- nings are included in the paint- ing's background that depicts Chiles standing in front of a window in his office with a mir- ror in the background reflecting towards the viewer. Just a few of the symbols that Still surrounded the gubernator with include his wife, Mrs. Rhea Chiles, a pair of walking shoes symbolizing the 1,003 miles Chiles waiked across Florida for his 1969 Senatorial campaign, a raccoon in refer- ence to a comment made during Chiles’ 1994 governor's race, and the Space Shuttle heading into the distant sky. * Visitors to Florida's state capitol will have the chance to view Still's work and reflect on the accomplishments of Lawton Chiles for quite some time. The portrait could hang in the building for as long as 72 years. Legal Notices Christopher Still's portrait of Florida Governor Lawton Chiles.
