Scholarship to honor Sylvia Holmes
A scholarship designed to
help young women achieve
higher education at an accredit-
ed college or university has
been established in honor of
Sylvia L. Holmes, former execu-
tive director of the Pioneer Girl
Scout Council. The Sylvia L.
Holmes Scholarship was creat-
ed by Holmes' family to honor
the many contributions she
made during her distinguished
tenure as Girl Scout executive
director. Ms. Holmes served as
executive director for sixteen
years, from 1980 until she re-
tired in 1996. The scholarship
fund will be administered by
the Community Foundation of
Gaston County.
Individuals who are eligible
to apply for the scholarship
must be female high school se-
niors and residents.of. the
Pioneer Girl Scout Council five-
county service area (Gaston,
Lincoln, Cleveland, Rutherford,
and Polk Counties). The young
woman does not have to be a
Girl Scout to apply, but partici-
pation in the Pioneer Girl Scout
Council will be looked upon
with favor.
The scholarship criteria is
based upon character and aca-
demic achievement.
Applications are available
through the Pioneer Girl Scout
Council and the Community
Foundation of Gaston County.
Applications must be received
by the Selection Committee or
postmarked on or before
‘February 1, 1999.

children, Lindsay Meakin and
Christopher Holmes.
Christopher and his wife
Midred live in Washington, DC,
and Lindsay and her husband

Contract awarded for KM connector road

Transportation awarded $34.9
million in highway contracts for
projects in 15 counties at its
meeting on December 4 in
Raleigh.
The contracts were for pro-
jects in Caswell, Chatham,
Sampson counties.
Work to be performed in
Cleveland and Gaston counties
will include building a two-lane
highway connecting Phifer
Road (S.R. 2256) and U.S. 74
Business near Kings Mountain.
