The Mountaineers lost to 4-A Boiling Springs 78-62 Friday night but bounced back Saturday to defeat Blacksburg 55-52. Coach Larry Sipe’s team now takes a two-week Christmas va- cation and he said he'll use that time to work his newest players - members of the Mountaineer football team - into basketball shape. “There are a lot of things that we're not doing well, but that’s understandable because we haven’t had a lot of practice time with everybody,” Sipe said. “We're going to get better as the season progresses.” Boiling Springs jumped out \ to a quick lead Friday night and ‘was never headed. The visitors led 17-14 at the first quarter break, 40-27 at halftime and 59- 41 going into the fourth quarter. Blake Buchanan led the win- ners with 15 points, followed by Reggie Frye with 14, Travis Stevens 13, and Fabien Williams 11. We don’t have a lot of practice time, but I thought the effort those kids gave was good considering they had been playing football last Friday night and have to get their basketball legs, basketball ind, and basketball shooting eye back. The effort was good, espe- cially against a good 4-A team like Boiling Springs.” The Mountaineers fell behind early against Saturday against Blacksburg, but heated up to trail by only 29-26 at halftime and lead 47-40 going into the fourth quarter. But the Wildcats hit four straight 3-point field goals in the fourth quarter to grab a 53- 52 lead with two minutes re- THERE ARE FOUR OF US HERE TO HELP YOU! But the Mountaineers held them scoreless over the fi- nal two minutes, and Goode hit two key baskets for the victory. “We didn’t handle those last two minutes the way we should have,” Sipe said. “In fact, Blacksburg had two shots in the last 15 seconds that could have gone in. Luckily, the didn’t and we got the rebound.” Kevin Henderson led the KM scoring with 17 points, and Goode and Jamal Byers added 12 each. Thompson had nine re- bounds, Goode eight and Byers six.
