He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, and was a 1995 graduate of Kings Mountain High School and a graduate of Gaston College. He was an artist. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Lucille Tuttle Guy. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Howard and Carrie Lee Painter Beard of Maiden; paternal grandfather, Woodrow W. Guy of Newton; and brother, Jeffery A. Guy of Kings Mountain. A memorial service was con- ducted by the Rev. Richard Newsome at 4 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church. Interment was in Patterson Grove Baptist Church cemetery. She was also preced- ed in death by her daughter, Kathy Tompkins. She was retired from WLTC Radio Station in Gastonia, and was a member of the First Church of The Nazarene. McCraw, 76, 3357 Humphries Rd., died January 7, 1999 at Hospice of Wendover. A native of Cliffside, N.C., he was the son of the late Rector and Elsie Goode McCraw. He was also preceeded in death by brothers Hoyle McCraw, Lloyd McCraw, and Howard McCraw, and a sister Estelle Goode. He was retired from Dover Mills af- ter 42 years as a blender. A native of Dillon, SC, he was the son of the late Harley and Carrie Hodges, and husband of the late Margaret Sessions Hodges. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Hodges, two sisters and three brothers. He was a retired textile em- ployee. He is survived by his daugh- ters Renee Borov of Kings Mountain, Caroline Riddle of Southpoint, NC, and Shirley Snyder of Marshall, MI; sister, Ella Jordon of Dillon, SC; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grand- children, and three great-great- grandchildren. He was retired owner of City Cab Co. and former manager of _Frank Glass Post #9811 VEW. He was past Commander of Frank Glass Post V.F.W., and served in the United States Army during World War II. BB&T reports earnings BB&T Corporation reported today record 1998 earnings to- taling $512.8 million, or $1.75 per share, before after-tax non- recurring charges of $11.0 mil- lion associated with completing mergers with Life Bancorp, INc. (Life) of Norfolk, Virginia in the first quarter and Franklin Bancorporation, Inc. (Franklin) of Washington, D.C. in the third quarter. Excluding nonrecurring charges, net income increased 19.7% and earnings per share increased 19.0% compared to n1997 BB& Ts" 1998 results ced-a return on average assets of 1.58% and a return on average equity of 20.16%, com- pared to prior year ratios of 1.48% and 18.58%, respectively. For the fourth quarter of 1998, BB&T's net income totaled $136.5 million, an increase of 18.8% compared to $114.9 mil- lion earned on recurring basis in 1997. Diluted earnings per share were $.46 for the fourth quarter compared $.39 in 1997, an increase of 17.9%. Including non-recurring charges, net income for 1998 in- creased 39.2% to $501.8 million, or $1.71 per diluted share, com- pared to $360.4 million, or $1.23 per share, in 1997. For the fourth quarter, net income was $136.5 million, or $.46 per share, compared to $89.4 million, or $.31 per “share, including non- recurring charges recorded last year. BB&T's "cash basis" operating results, which excluded the ef- fect of intangible assets and the related amortization expense, improved significantly for the three months and the year end- ed December 31, 1998, com- pared to the same periods in 1997. Cash basis recurring earn- — ings totaled $$536.9 million, or $1.83 per diluted share, for the full year 1998, increases of 21.6% and 21.2% respectively over recurring prior year re- sults. For the fourth quarter, cash basis earnings totaled $144.7 million, or $.49 per dilut- ed share, increases of 21.9% and 19.5 % respectively, over com- parable prior year amounts.
