Showcasing the as- sisted living concept in caring for elders, EdenGardens hosted resident's family members, friends, and dignitaries for the event which featured refresh- ments, decorations, and old- time hospitality. We wanted to celebrate assist- ed living," said EdenGardens marketing director Denise Leonard. One of the special guests at EdenGardens was Jerry L. Cooper, Executive Director of the North Carolina Assisted Living Association. Cooper's or- ganization represents 8,000 beds in assisted living facilities across the state. "When a person enters an as- sisted living center, we want them to feel as if the only thing that has changed about their life is the address," Cooper said. "We want assisted living facili- ties to be integrated into the community and allow residents to continue their relationships with churches, garden clubs, friends, and relatives. Assisted living is really supported hous- ing for senior citizens who need Picture eight of your girlfriends. Statistically, one of them will develop breast cancer. But statistics also show that early detection is your best defense against this disease. So if you're age 40 or over, you should begin annual mammography screenings. You should also ask your physician about a routine of clinical breast exams and monthly self-examinations. If you need more information on breast cancer, call Gaston Memorial's Comprehensive Cancer Center at (704) 834-2932. This year, an estimated 43,500 women will die of breast cancer. So get a mammogram. For residents who have Alzheimer's and other cognitive difficulties, EdenGardens has their "Keepsake" program. Housed in a secure environ- ment with a 24 hour, 7 day a week staff, "Keepsake" provides residents with activities and surrounding that retain to the highest possible degree a sense of family and familiarity. A spe- cial feature of the "Keepsake" program is an outdoor garden Better yet, take a girlfriend and both of you go. area where residents can walk or simply enjoy the sun. "One of the most important differences between assisted liv- ing and other types of senior citizen care is the social and res- idential approach we take as opposed to an institutional feel," Cooper commented. Another misconception about assisted living is that it is only for the wealthy. “Thirty five percent of people seeking assisted living are qual- ified for Medicaid and state or ==\The Comprehensive =_/ Cancer Center At Gaston Memorial county assistance," Cooper said. "We are working hard to make assisted living available for all income levels." As a popcorn machine filled the lobby of EdenGardens with its heavenly aroma, and friends chatted in front of a crackling fire, all seemed like home. "The people here are just like family," said EdenGardens resi- dent and Kings Mountain na- tive Mae Sue McGillis. "I worked at the Margrace mill for many years and it's that same type of family feeling."
