The minutes were read and accepted as information. Susan Gibson, Club Treasurer, gave the treasurer's report of $649.84. Mrs. Gibson collected dues and issued calendars. Glenda Crawford reminded the members of what to do in the garden for January. All perennials need to be cut back and beds need to be mulched. Now is the time to plant winter blooming shrubs. Glenda Crawford gave a pro- gram "Attracting Birds to Your Garden." Plant trees, shrubs, and other vegetation that will attract birds. These are useful because the birds eat insects that inhabit the plants. It is best to start to feed the birds after Labor Day before the summer birds have started to migrate. This will entice them to stay longer. Continue to feed them until the weather improves and the birds can survive on their own. Birds that are meat lovers will enjoy suet or lard rolled in seeds. The bluebirds will eat cornbread that has bacon drip- pings on it. Birds love to bathe so the birdbaths need to be kept free from slime. Also, don't let them freeze or have them too deep. Mrs. Crawford noted that many predators have depleted the bluebird population. Metal caps below the bluebird houses will keep snakes and other ene- mies away. professionals. helpful information.
