\ SCHOOL ager Thursday, February 4, 1999 + HAPPENINGS Herald/Times Section B, Page 1 Grants provide schools extra opportunities No school system ever has enough money to . do everything it feels is important to meet the needs of its employees and students. Obviously, systems must set priorities for spending and work within available resources. We have been successful in expanding our programs, however, through the attainment in recent years of several grants. In today’s column I want to give you a look at four grants we are using this year to pro- vide extra opportunities. One program supported by a grant is Ready, Set, GROW which recently received a Governor's Program of Excellence Award. This program which provides summer enrichment for entering kindergartners in need of additional preparation before schbol begins is in part funded through a. grant from our county’s Partnership for Children, the Smart Start program. Our current level of funding from this agency is $16,000 which en- ables us to apply our school system savings to other projects. Approximately 50 children are served each summer in Ready, Set, GROW. Bob McRae Superintendent Kings Mountain Schools This year we also received a grant for $79,000 in cooperation with the other two school systems in Cleveland County. The College Tech Prep Enhancement Grant provides funds which allow the systems to work with Cleveland Community College to develop a document, a road map if you will, for students to use to help them deter- mine how to best prepare for life after high school. Also, school system and college personnel work together to align curricula between the high schools and college so that students will not have to unnecessarily repeat coursework taken in high school when they enter their community college major. An additional $79,000 will also be available to continue this work during the 1999-2000 school year. At the end of the project students entering high school should be able to better plan for courses they need to take to prepare them for their chosen post-high school destination. Our system received a $49,420 Goals 2000 Schools Improvement Grant this year. This is also done in cooperation with the other two school systems in Cleveland County and with Cleveland Community College. This is our fourth consecu- tive award under the Goals 2000 program. This year’s funds are being used to develop leadership training. The money is being targeted towards training to improve student achievement through the use of technology. Over the life of the federal- ly funded Goals 2000 program our system has re- ceived $200,000 for use. We were also successful this year, in coopera- tion with the Cleveland County Schools, in re- ceiving a Technology Literacy Challenge Grant which brought an additional $55,362 to our school system. We are using these funds to pro- vide a comprehensive staff development effort in technology training for our employees. Staff members are being trained in the use of technolo- gy, the application of technology as an education- al tool within the classroom, and technologies that include grade level and subject area content. Participants are able to get certificate renewal credits through an arrangement with Cleveland Community College. Many times school systems have to neglect car- rying out programs important to their success due to the lack of available funding. We certainly do not address every need we believe exists for our system, but we have been able to go beyond what we ordinarily would do thanks to our suc- cess in grant procurement. A successful grant ap- plication requires employees with initiative and commitment. We are fortunate to have many in our system willing to go the extra mile to help us secure our share of competitive grant funding. We believe these grants better enable us to teach our children well. Hopefully, our success will continue. ye EAST SCHOOL TERRIFIC KIDS- Row 1; Kendra Syda, Katie Swafford, Ricky Greene, J.J. Smith, Nicholas Furr, Tabitha Lamb, Lydia Anthony.
