“Gray Howard is an excellent
player coming off that junior
high team,” Ballenger said.
“Adam Maddox is a good play-
er. They're pretty accomplished
for ninth graders, and on their
way to being real good.”
Ballenger said the
Mountaineers have been im-
pressive in two scrimmages,
and he looks forward to seeing
how they do in head-to-head
competition with Chesnee, SC
in their season opener Tuesday
at Kings Mountain Country
Club.

“I've been real impressed
with them so far,” he said. |
“We've played pretty well in
the scrimmages. We haven't
had good weather for scoring,
but we shot 155 the other day
which is a good score. We
should have some low scores
this year.”
Ballenger predicts it will take
18-hole scores of 300 to 310 to
compete on the Regional and
State level.
“It used to be 320 or better
was considered good,” he said.
“But now I'm saying if you
don't’ get it around 300 to 310
you're not going to be one of
the best teams. Since I've been
coaching in the last 10 years the
scores have dropped about 10
shots over 18 holes. It shows
you that a lot more people are
playing and kids are getting
better quicker.”
If the Mountaineers do make
it to the state tournament this
. year, local fans will have an ex-
. cellent opportunity to see them
: compete. This year’s state event
- will be at The Tradition in
* Charlotte since the North
. Carolina High School Athletic
. Association’s home course,
* Finley Golf Course in Chapel
~ Hill, is undergoing major reno-
: vation.
