Senior Joy Dixon as been se- lected as Kings Mountain High School's Student of the Month for February. The daughter of Wayne and Regina Dixon, Joy sets high standards for herself as well as her fellow students. A peer tutor for Mary Ann Lattimore's math class, Dixon has. won praise for her attitude and work there. "Joy is an exceptional stu- dent," said Lattimore. A standout French horn play- er, Dixon is a popular member of the Kings Mountain High School band. "Joy is a pleasure to teach and has served as a leader in our band," said music teacher Chris Cole. "Her pleasant personality and talent will be missed next year." Full of bright energy, Dixon is still working on her plans for a career. "I plan to attend Western Carolina University next year," Dixon said. "I'm going to pur- sue teaching as a career, but I'm not sure what class or grade." - A down to earth type of lady, Dixon is pleased to be Student of the Month, but keeps it all i in perspective. "This is a really nice school, and it's nice to be picked out, but there are a lot of other good people here too." Kindergarten registration under way Children who will be five years old on or before October 16, 1999 should register for kindergarten in their respective school districts. If parents do not know which school their child will attend, they should call the Kings Mountain District Office at 734-5637. Applications and Kindergarten Health Assessment Reports are avail- able at all elementary schools. The application should be com- pleted and returned to the school as soon as possible. The Kindergarten Health Assessment Report is to be completed by the child’s physi- cian or the health department and is due on or before September 7, 1999. Orientation Day for incoming kindergarten children and their parents is scheduled for May 7 at all elementary schools. At this time parents are to take the child’s official birth certificate and social security number. No child can be enrolled without the official birth certificate. On’ Orientation Day parents will take their child to school at 8:30 a.m. and remain for an informa- tive session with the school principal, which will last ap- proximately one hour. The chil- dren will go to classes and en- joy a typical kindergarten day, ending with lunch in the cafete- ria as guests of the school sys- tem. Parents will pick up their children at 11:30 a.m. Regular kindergarten children will not attend school on this day. Questions should be directed to Jane C. KM’s Hart Wells to give senior recital at Appalachian Sue Myrick forms youth advisory council In an effort to involve young people in government and give them an opportunity to provide their perspectives on key issues, U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick today an- nounced the formation of a 9th District Youth Advisory Council. High School students from Mecklenburg, ‘Gaston, Lincoln and Cleveland counties are eli- gible to apply for the 12-month effort. The council will meet monthly to discuss issues and hear from elected officials, pub- lic servants and other people in- volved in community service. Students will be selected through an internship process. Applications have been dis- tributed to area government and history teachers and can al- so be picked up by going to one of Myrick’s district offices. Additional applications are available by calling 861-1976. Students will be selected based on their interest in government, their academic achievement and their enthusiasm for learn- ing about community involve- ment. Deadline for applications . is March 31. HART WELLS He will join senior voice major Ann Uzzell, a mass- soprano from Charlotte, in a performance entitled “Evening of Voice and Guitar.” The event is free and open to the public. Afterward, Hart and Anna will be honored at a reception given by their parents and the music department in Broyhill. Hart will play classical guitar and will perform six major se- lections: “Prelude #1 in E Minor,” “Prelude #3 in A Minor,” “Prelude #4 in E Minor” by the 20th century Brazilian composer Heitor Villa j. Sonata in A Major” and “Sonata in E Minor” by 17th century Italian Baroque com- poser Domenico Scarlatti; and “Sevilla” by the French roman- tic composer Isaac Albeniz. Anna and Hart will join together to perform two Brazilian folk tunes arranged for voice and guitar by Laurindo Almeida. Hart is a teaching fellow who plans to teach elementary mu- sic. He graduated from Kings Mountain High in 1995. He is the grandson of Lucy and the late Harold Wells of Kings Mountain and the late Lester and Blannie Hart of Ashe County. His grandfather, Lester Hart, who was an accomplished . singer and musician, taught Hart the chords to play the gui- tar when he was 12 years old. He was accepted into the guitar program at Appalachian where he has studied under the direc- tion of Douglas James. Hart has a sister, Kellene Bock, who is a guidance coun- selor at the Alternative School in Hickory, and a brother, Brett, who is a sophomore at UNC- Greensboro in theater educa- tion. Hart's maternal uncle, David Hart, resides in Ashe County, and his maternal aunt and uncle, Nancy and Allen Clay, live in Lenoir. His paternal uncle and aunt, Larry and Nancy Wells, live in Kings Mountain. Anna is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Uzzell of Charlotte. She plans to go to graduate school in voice. Hart was recently honored at ASU as an All-American Scholar, and he presently serves as. treasurer of Appalachian’s student music association. He has been on the dean's list nu- merous times.
