High's greatest athletes and one _& of its most successful coaches were inducted into the Kings . Mountain Sports Hall of Fame at its 12th annual ceremony © Monday night at B.N. Barnes w= Auditorium. James Gibson, a football and baseball star from the 1930s and ‘40s, was inducted posthu- mously along with 1980s tennis sensation Bryan Jones, and 1960's basketball and baseball coach Bobby Hussey. Tommy John, a 26-year veter- an of the major leagues and now Community Relations Director for the Charlotte Knights, was the guest speaker. Special Achievement Awards went to the KMHS state cham- pionship volleyball team; North Carolina 3-A golf champion Michael Jolly, and North Carolina 3-A wrestling champi- ons Julius Curry and Anthony Ash. Special Recognition Awards went to the KMHS football team which won the Southwestern 3A Conference and finished second in the state, and the KMHS women’s swim team which won the SWC. The Hall of Fame presented : $500 scholarships to senior ath- . letes Anthony Ash, Julius Curry and D Chapman; and the first Fred Withers Scholarship, given i in honor of the former KMHS baseball coach and Hall of Fame . member by his son, Grafton Withers, went to KMHS track and cross country star Chad Pearson. All of the inductees were re- membered fondly by their pre- senters. Former KMHS baseball coach Barry Gibson said his uncle, who died over 30 years ago, left a legacy that will live on through the Hall of Fame. “He was a great athlete, {served the community, and was a successful businessman,” + Gibson said. “But more impoz- ; . tantly, he put his church and his # family first. He was a devoted : family man and a Christian.” Gibson was remembered as a “gifted athlete,” who played : high school football and base- : ball from the time he was in the # seventh grade. He was Kings i Mountain's first All-State foot- i: ball player in 1940, was a mem- ber of the Western Conference : championship baseball team in : 1941, and played football and # baseball at Appalachian and Elmore 6-0, 6-1; Chris Bennett (KM) 5 football at N.C. State. “From all accounts he was a great offensive and defensive = football player who loved mak- i ing the big plays,” his nephew noted. Gibson's son, Jim Jr., who ac- cepted the award for the family, i said his father “would be so © proud and would like to thank all of his teammates and coach- es.” Bryan Jones, who was an All- American at both KMHS and the University of North Carolina, was introduced by his college coach, Allen Morris, now the athletic director at Presbyterian College. Jones took up the game of tennis at age 8. With coaching and advice from his father, he was highly successful in junior tournaments all across the southeast. He lost only one match in three years as a player a KMHS and won the state championship his junior year.
