Senior Center hosts volunteer brunch The Kings Mountain Senior Center held its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch Saturday, June 12th, at 11 am at the Center. This Brunch honors all the volunteers who have served the Center in the past year. These volunteers: were Roberta Brown, Hilda Goforth, Helen Lowery, Inell Mobley, and Ethel McGinnis. The brunch menu included hot chicken salad, green beans, croissants, carrot raisin salad, brownie with raspberry syrup, and tea prepared and served by the Senior Center staff under the direction of Monty Thornburg. Tables were deco- rated with handmade top hats filled with variegated ivy and red carnations. Red plates and cups along with peach napkins . and curling ribbons, a volunteer picture frame as a gift for each volunteer, and a peach and red program completed the decora- tions. After director Monty Thornburg welcomed everyone, and Jim Belt, Chairman of the Kings Mountain Senior Center Advisory Board, gave the invo- cation, administrative assistant Sharon Eaker introduced the es- say winners and gave them prizes. Carolyn Bell, Mattie Scoggins, and Teresa Yarborough of the Senior Center staff distributed door prizes donated by the daughter of the late Charles R. The topic for the essay was "My favorite older friend that has that magic touch because.." First place winner in the con- test was Heather Walker, daughter of Palace and Tammy Walker. The subject of Walker's essay was her grandmother Linda Walker. Second place was given to Megan Wright, daughter of * Gordon and Sherry Wright, and _. granddaughter of William Edward Branton, Janet Haynes, and Irene and the late Herman Wright. The subject of Wright's essay was Paw Paw Ed Branton. The third place award went to Nikki Deaver, daughter of Tina Deaver and Randy Deaver, and granddaughter of Judy and Larry Deaver, and Kay Patterson and the late Larry Patterson. The subject of Deaver's essay was Ellen Elam.
