According to Jean Thrift, direc- tor of student services for Kings Mountain Schools, summer school programs are hot as a July firecracker. Summer school classes at Kings Mountain High School began June 2 and will run until June 29 with testing on the last day of classes. Tuition for the classes is $160 per student for one unit. Classes were offered on the basis of student demand. Available for students presently in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, the courses were based on an aver- age enrollment of 15 students minimum per class. The absentee policy for sum- ‘mer classes at Kings Mountain High School will be one day of summer classes equals five days of regular school. Classes will meet from 8 am until 1 pm dai- ly. ¥ Much summer school activity is going on at Kings Mountain Middle School. Hitting all areas where students might need help, classes are being conduct- ed in reading, math, language arts, science, social studies, and computer skills. In a special computer camp that began May 31 and will run until June 11, Kings Mountain Middle School students can bone up on their skills. "This is a remedial class that is offered to rising 8th grade students that score at achieve- ment level IV on their 7th grade end of year reading test," said Thrift. Cost of the computer camp is $25 per student and classes meet from 8 am until 3 pm. State-funded computer class- es for students in grades 3 through 8 are also available this summer at Kings Mountain Middle School. These classes will begin July 6 and last until July 16. Time will be from 8 am until 1 pm with a 25 minute The Bethware School Class of 1949 held its 50th year reunion recently at the Bethiehem Baptist Church fellowship center. They met at 5 p.m. for a time of fellowship, and at 7 p.m. they enjoyed a delicious meal of BBQ chicken and pork prepared by jake Dixon. Transportation is available for these classes. Tuition summer school at KMMS held registration and the first day of classes on June 2. "Tuition summer school is for current 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who failed a course in math, language, or reading and who are not eligible for state-funded summer school," said Thrift. Cost for tuition summer school is $160 per student for one unit. Payment was due at registration. Subjects being studied are language arts, read- ing, and math. No credit will be given to students who miss more than four days. Tuition summer school for students who failed a local class in science or social studies will begin July 5 and last four days. Classes will meet from 8 am un- til 1 pm with a cost of $40. No transportation or lunch will be available for these classes. Summer will be also be a busy time for preschool kids in Kings Mountain and Grover. Preschool programs to help kids get ready for the rigors of their scholastic years include Ready, Set, Grow, Smart Start, and Headstart. Eskridge received a Bachelor of Fine Arts/Interdisciplinary degree from San Francisco Art Institute on May 16 at the school’s 121st commencement exercises. Kitty Carlisle was the commence- ment speaker. Will completed high school at Kings Mountain High School and North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. He ten attended New York School of Visual Arts/Savannah branch for two years prior to San Francisco Art Institute. While completing his studies at SFAI, Will had work exhibited in several San Francisco gal- leries. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Eskridge of Kings Mountain. Dale McCoig named to spring dean’s list Mountain has been named to the spring semester dean’s list at North Greenville College. A sophomore majoring in Interdisciplinary studies, he is the son of Arthur and Bertia McClain. He is a 1996 graduate of Berea High School. To qualify of the dean's list, one must maintain a 3.5 grade point average while taking a minimum of 12 hours.
