Herald/ Times Bike Pat New wheels get KM cops closer to the community By KAMIE CHAMPION The Commaunity Oriented Policing (COPS) program has added a new dimension to policing in Kings Mountain. A new bike unit that includes two Giant mountain bikes and four trained riders has been up and running since early spring. "The bike patrol has been in the works for the past two years," Chief Richard Reynolds com- mented. "Our goal was to start with two bikes and then add two more to enhance what COPS is already doing," he added. The bikes are expensive and the department has been very fortunate that donations were given to help purchase the first two bikes. Officers Chad Burnette, Brent Harp, Tony Reeves, and Steve Skinner are the certified riders at the department and plans are to send several more officers to training in July and August. Training includes a week of extensive riding and learning maneuvers on the bikes. Officers learn to ride up and down steps, sprint, run, and fire at targets, as well as, learn take down techniques from the bikes. The officers are then able to do different things that are often difficult from a patrol car. "The bike patrol is a good, quiet way to keep surveillance and a means to get up close and per- sonal with the community," Reynolds stated. "People are surprised and glad to see us," said Officer Reeves. The bike patrol is a way to get involved with the people in the community and promote a positive image of po- lice work, he stated. Officer Skinner added that they had received a lot of posi- tive calls and comments about the bikes. "We are trying to fit the needs of the city by adding another means of protection for the citizens and a deterrence to crime," said Skinner. The bike patrol will be sched- uled for use as needed. Itis a tactical type unit and there will not be scheduled hours, said KAMIE CHAMPION / THE HERALD Tony Reeves, left, Steve Skinner - KMPD's bike patrol Reynolds. "Everyone is excited about this. COPS is a very im- portant part of our steps to stop crime before it happens by in- teracting with the public," Reynolds said. with special Holiday ants you this weekend!
