HOT DOG From 1A The hot dog drill at One Stop involves getting a steamed bun from a little oven, tonging your dog of choice on the bun, then building whatever style of hot- dog you desire. Condiments are available in little packs and in- clude hot sauce, mustard, ketchup, and mayo. Fixin's are in separate containers and in- clude slaw, onion, and chili. One important thing to note about the hot dog station at One Stop is the cleanliness. A fully loaded dog at One Stop is less than a buck. Add a fountain drink and chips and the price is only $1.69. Folks have been coming to Griffin Drugs in Kings Mountain for decades looking for a dog. The one they find there is unusually fine. Griffin's hot dog is a taste of the old time soda fountain days when hot dogs, hamburgers, and toasted pimento cheese sandwiches filled many lunchtime tummies. The hot dog at Griffin is served on a lightly toasted bun whose slightly crunch and warm exterior adds another di- mension of "mouth feel” to the eating experience. Jammed in the bun, Griffin's weenie is a plump, juicy affair without any of that artificial red #4 twang one often finds on lesser quality franks. - BOOTS Starting at $7099 BRIDGES HARDWARE AND HOME CENTER 1100 S. Cansler St. at = CT A TRY WOLVERINE] The fixins' on Griffin's hot dog are freshly made each day. Slaw still had some crunchy bits in it and had not turned into green mush. Onions were not overpowering and were diced to a good size. The chili was a little sharp, but not excessively so. Lots of mustard topped the whole $1.15 deal off. Maybe I was just extra hun- gry, or maybe it was because the hot dog at Griffin reminded me of those we used to get from Belmont Drugs when I was a kid, but I ended up tearing a piece off the little cardboard boat the dog was served in and used it like a spoon to scoop up and devour every bit of goodie that had fallen off. Last stop on the hot dog trail was Rick's Ole Country Store and Grill in the Ebenezer com- munity. A popular stop for peo- ple traversing the highway be- tween Cherryville and Kings Mountain, Rick's serves up a variety of sandwiches and other grub in addition to hot dogs. The hot dog at Rick's was a tasty affair topped with chopped onions, chili, mustard, and slaw. Of all the ingredients that went into making Rick's hot dog, the slaw was perhaps the most unique. Homemade, Rick's slaw was liberally spiced with flecks of black pepper. This gave the entire dog a bit of bite that set it apart from most bland, store bought slaws. Price of a hot dog all the way at Rick's was $1.15 plus tax. Top dog of all the ones I bit into in and around Kings Mountain was the item at . Griffin Drug Center. Besides bringing back a taste of old days around the soda fountain, Griffin's hot dog was fat and swaddled in homemade fixin's. An even better endorsement came from Griffin owner Harold Bolick. "I eat one every single day," said Bolick. "The girls that make the hot dogs here put a lot of TLC into every one." For a taste sensation that'll send you back to the days of bobby sox and 57 Chevys, put the bite on a dog from Griffin - Drugs.
