Councilwoman Norman Bridges and Senior Center Chairman Jim Belt told the Council at its meeting Tuesday night at City Hall that $875,000 has been pledged, and about $300,000 is needed by the end of the month. “We hope to see a little more activity,” said Bridges. “People need to know that they can do- nate anything. It doesn’t have to be a big amount of money.” Bridges said many people are ‘pooling their pledges to provide a room costing anywhere from $15,000 to $75,000. Thus far, the cost of five rooms has been ’ pledged. Donations can be ear- marked in memory or in honor of someone. Bridges said the purchase of land is complete, the deed has been registered, and soil testing is being conducted. : The 20 members of the steer- ing committee have pledged $500 each, and the four co- chairmen have pledged $1,000 each, providing enough money for one room. Belt said donations can be paid over a three-year period, with the first payment being made by the end of this year. “We're pushing to hit one million dollars by the end of next week,” Belt said. “The committee chairmen have a - meeting with the County Commissioners and hope they will go ahead and commit to this project.” Belt said permits have al- ready been applied for and site clearing could begin soon. Hord reported to City Council Tuesday night that Mountaineer Days will revert back to “the old days” when the celebration is more than a one- day event; and that hopefully part of the Christmas celebra- tion will center around the pro- posed new gazebo near Railroad Avenue. Mountaineer Days will run October 13-16 beginning with a gospel sing on the lawn of City Hall. Hord said the gazebo, which will include the cupola off the old City Hall/ Police Station, is scheduled to be completed by October 13 at the vacant lot at Railroad Avenue and West Gold Street which has been undergo- ing a facelift for over a year. Activities on the 14th will cen- ter around that site. A big fireworks display is planned after the Kings Mountain football game on’ Friday, Oct. 15, and the typical downtown activities which in- clude arts and crafts, food and children’s games will be held on Sat., Oct. 16. The Christmas parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4. Six floats have already been se- cured and Hord is looking for. groups to ride-on them: The Kings Mountain Business Association will also sponsor a number of Christmas activities around the gazebo/ park. Mayor Scott Neisler appoint- ed a Christmas decorating com- mittee which includes Sandra Murphrey, chairman; Tripp Hord, Mary Neisler, Evelyn Hamrick Shirley Austin, Shirley Brutko, Mary Anne Hendricks and Ashley Harris. In another matter, Hord re- ported that the renovation of Davidson Park is almost com- plete and should be ready for the start of soccer season in a couple of weeks. Lights have been installed, fencing is up in the outfield area, goals have been'delivered, and gravel is being placed in the parking ar- eas. - Hord also reported that he is working on a possible grant of up to $25,000 from the North . Carolina Division of Tourism which, if approved, would pro- vide funding for the “finishing touches” to the gazebo.
