That blinking light is serving as a warning that the DOT’s new traffic light is in place, and within about a week the light will be turned on permanently. City officials hope the change will help the traffic flow through downtown and across the railroad tracks. The signalization plan has been a six-month project by the City and Department of Transportation, and is one of the last intersections on a major thoroughfare in North Carolina to be updated with proper rail- road signalization. “This was a particular project that the state has been wanting to set a priority for for a long time,” said Kings Mountain City Manger Jimmy Maney. “To get this situation straightened out certainly has taken the lia- bility away from everyone in- volved.” ~~ Maney said citizens should be happy to see the light back in operation, because they'll be able to come through the inter- section without having to wor- ry about being stopped on the railroad tracks or having mo- torists running stop signs. _. "We have had about 10 acci- dents down there since the light came down,” he noted. “This ‘will also help us regulate the speed of traffic through the middle of town. Everybody knows we receive a lot of truck traffic going in and out of the mines, and it allows better con- trol of traffic through town.” Maney and city and DOT of- ficials will be meeting again this week to begin working on a traffic plan for the proposed new Senior Center near the in- tersection of Canterbury Road and Business 74. + Thecity is going to request a traffic count and study of the intersection to determine what kind of signalization is needed to control the traffic that will be going in and out of the new se- nior center. “We are also looking at low- ering the speed limit when you get off I-85 and onto Business 74 so you come over the bridge at .a reduced rate of speed,” Maney said. “Trucks entering highway” signs may also be erected on Highway 74 business around the new Senior Center site.
