5 RAYMOND BARBER KINGS MOUNTAIN- Raymond Keith Barber, 48, 614 Ross Road, died October 27, 1999 at Carolina Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Lawrence Davis Barber and Marie Wilson Barber of Gastonia. He was a sheet metal worker. In addition to his mother, he is survived by son Jason Barber of the home; daughters Melissa Barber of the home and Jeanine Barber of Florida; brothers Reginald, David, and Michael Barber of Kings Mountain, and Charles Barber of Lawndale; sisters Kay Williams of Gastonia and Nancy Dunn of S.C.; also four grandchildren. THOMAS GANTT SHELBY- Thomas Steve Gantt, 45, 601 Wilson Cornwell Road, died October 29, 12999 at home. ; A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Bobby Gene and Elizabeth Howard Gantt of the home. He is survived by brothers and sisters in law Louis and Barbara Gantt of Kings Mountain, Ricky and Marilyn Gantt of Shelby, and Larry and Teresa Gantt of Lawndale; sister and brother in law Teresa and Bill Thrift of Lawndale; nieces Katie and Kensy Gantt of Lawndale; nephew Jason Gantt of Belwood. EARL MARR GASTONIA- Earl Doyle Marr, 70, 1508 Linwood Road, died October 27, 1999 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Ervin and Lula Picklesimer Marr. He was a retiree of Cape Fear Trucking Co. with 19 years of service and attended Christian Freedom Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Conwell Marr of the home; sons and daughters in law Ricky and Frieda Marr of Kings Mountain and Larry and Rita Marr of Gastonia; daugh- ters and sons in law Cathy and Donald Ramey of Clover, S.C. Sherry Rucker, Angie and Richard Cogdill of Kings Mountain, Melody and David White of Cherryville, Terry and Scott Sherill of Clover; sister Betty Jean Myers; 15 grandchil- dren and one great grandchild. The funeral was conducted Saturday at 1 pm at Christian Freedom Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Chambers. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. FRED HAMRICK SHELBY- Fred Monroe Hamrick, 78, 852 Springmont Drive, died October 27, 1999 at White Oak Manor, Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Deck Hamrick and Lillie Hamrick. He was the husband of the late Kathaleen Huffman Hamrick. He was also preced- ed in death by his son Bobby Hamrick and grandson Jason Hamrick. He was a retired painter. He is survived by sons and daughters in law Joe and Betty Hamrick of Cherryville, Loyd and Candy Hamrick of Shelby, John Ray and Christine Hamrick of Belwood, Scott and Sheila Hamrick of Lawndale, Boyd and Carolyn Hamrick of Shelby, Ronnie and Barbara Hamrick of Shelby, Reggie and Robin Hamrick of Shelby; 11... daughter and son in law Barbara and James Camp of Shelby; daughter Evelyn Mellon of Shelby; sister Ethel McGinnis of Kings Mountain; also 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. November 4, 1999 Holly Evans and Snappy Syl KM’s Holly Evans wins State Fair Horse Show Holly Evans of Kings Mountain was a big winner in the North Carolina State Youth Day Horse Show at the NC State Fair. Holly and her horse, Snappy Syl, won first place in Trail, first place in English Showmanship, and second place in Western Showmanship. She was reserve champion in the Western Pony division. She tied for the champi- onship for overall Western Division. Holly also came away a win- ner in the recent Cleveland County Fair Horse Show. She and her horse, Way to the Top, won first place in English Showmanship, first in Western Showmanship, and won the championship in Overall Showmanship. Holly is in the ninth grade at Kings Mountain High School. She is the daughter of Donna and David Evans of Kings Mountain. Relay for Life being planned It’s never too soon to start thinking about the Relay For Life cancer walkathon. Even though the projected date for the event is not until September 2000, Mike Nealy and his Relay associates are already hard at work getting the word out. “We decided to move the eventfrom spring to «ue! ed September,” Nealy says. “We. .. felt the weather might be warmer and bring out even more people than last year. The exact date is still to be decided.” So far, the Relay for Life com- mittee has had one organizational meeting. Plans are for a Relay float in the up- coming Kings Mountain Christmas parade. The commit- tee will set other goals after Christmas at its January meet- ing. “People interested in volun- teering for next year’s Relay for Life Teams or committees can call me at 937-3423.” said Nealy. “It’s not too soon to think about it.” Even though the Relay for Life hasn't officially lined up corporate sponsors yet, several have been contacted and‘are ex- pected. fo be.on boaxd byinext June. Last year’s Relay For Life was smashing success. At the North Carolina state Relay For Life convention put on by the American Cancer Society, Cleveland County and Shelby went away with kudos for their efforts in raising money for cancer research. The region was recognized for raising the 12th largest amount of money in the entire nation based on its popu- lation size. Deuces Wild, Duck Heads win Deuces Wild dropped six of eight games to Thursday’s Heroes in Mixed Duckpin Bowling League action Thursday night, but still claimed the first quarter title with a 42-22 record. Allen Myers led the Heroes (36-28) with a 145 line and 391 set, and Ed Philbeck had a 113- 316. Greg Evans led Deuces Wild with a 144-377. Zeke Rybezyk led the Duck Heads with a 129-335, and John Dilling led the Old Timers with a 115-327. Colleen Philbeck had a 107-308. Tyrene’s Ducks (28-36) held onto third place with a 4-4 split with Ducks Unlimited (26-38). Ed Philbeck led Tyrene’s Ducks with a 131 line and 337 set.
