December 2, 1999 Herald/Times KM area ready for Y2K BY ALAN HODGE Staff Writer Like the town criers of old, representatives of Fidelity Bank, the American Red Cross, Duke Power, and the City of Kings Mountain gathered Tuesday evening at city hall to declare “all is well” with the upcoming Y2K event. The presentation got under way with a session where rep- resentatives of the companies and agencies involved in local Y2K readiness answered ques- tions about what steps they had taken to make sure the new millennium arrives smoothly. Representatives who met the public included Rick Dancy, executive director of the Cleveland County Red Cross, Steve Smith of Duke Power, Reynolds. The presentation was hosted by Carol George, city computer analyst and head of the Kings Mountain Y2K Task force. After an hour long question and answer period, George pre- sented a detailed analysis of what steps the City of Kings Mountain has taken to prepare for January 1, 2000. “We want everyone to be con- fident we are ready for Y2K and that it will be just another day at work,” George said. “We have been working hard for the past'year to understand what potential Y2K problems could arise and how they can be prevented.” Some of the steps the city has taken for Y2K readiness include identifying potential problem areas, fixing the glitches, retest- Nick Hendricks with the Kings Mountain electric department, ° and Jeff Moody of Fidelity Burns, and police chief Richard Players needed... for AAU basketball The East Gaston YMCA... Also in attendance was Kings Mountain fire chief Frank: ¥ WZ MURAL From 7A In another matter, Council was told by the City Manager that it has been discovered that, a piece of property on West = King St. that Isothermal Council of Governments wanted to. pur- chase for a shared living facility had been designated in the 1970s as a greenway. Maney suggested that staff research the matter and bring a recommen- dation back to Council in January, at which time Council may want to re-designate the property as a greenway to pro- tect it in the future. ing the problem areas, then doc- umenting the whole procedure. George and her colleagues had over 900 different inventory items to check in 15 different categories ranging from gas valves to traffic lights. All buta few passed their Y2K test on the first try. Another aspect of Tuesday evenings Y2K presentation fo- cused on what steps the Kings Mountain fire and police de- partments would play in the Y2K situation. Working togeth- er, the departments will be manning nine mobile command centers on New Years Eve. In case of telephone outages, citi- zens can go to the command centers and report any emer- gencies that might arise. Posts will be set up at Kings Mountain High School, Food Lion parking lot, Resurrection Lutheran Church, Kings Mountain Hospital, Little Dan's on York Road, Kings Mountain Public Works, Express Store at Linwood and Cleveland Ave., Temple Baptist Church, and the Kings Mountain Police Department. “ All police personnel will be on duty beginning at 7 pm December 31,” said Chief Reynolds. With all the preparation that Kings Mountain city employees and others have put into the up- coming Y2K evening, citizens can rest assured the New Year will get off to a smooth start. The key words “business as usual” voiced by all representa- tives at Tuesday’s presentation summed up the confidence they had in their efforts. The Cleveland County Lady Cobras challenge soccer team won the Greensboro Challenge Clash November 21-22. The Lady Cobras defeated teams from Charlotte, Raleigh and Winston- Salem with a 16-2 goal differential to win the under-13 girls white division. Members of the team are Selena Owens, Sara Sipe, Candace Campion, Lindsey Moore, Logan Beam, Amanda Peters, Stacey Spicer, Ashton Teague, Blair Heffner, Alex Dawson, Stephanie Pitt, Susie Potter, Jamie McNeilly, Emily Edwards and Ginny Clauss.
