Moore of the Kings Mountain Police Department pose with one of the gaming machines they and other officers seized in a raid on Carpenter Street last Wednesday. The bust yielded 33 arrests on a total of 82 drug and gambling charges. Undercover operation nets 82 charges By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald A six-month undercover in- vestigation of drug sales on the streets of Kings Mountain re- sulted in the Thanksgiving eve arrest of 33 persons on 82 charges. Det. Sgt. Lisa Proctor of the Kings Mountain Police Department said the investiga- tion was a joint effort between KMPD and the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department. Undercover officers from both departments were used to purchase crack cocaine, mari- juana, powdered cocaine, Xanax, and methamphetamine. Illegal gambling was also tar- geted. “The investigation came ‘“about:from'concerng arising in: the City of Kings Mountain, as, well as in Cleveland County's jurisdiction,” Proctor said. “We .. used undercover officers from both agencies to go into each other’s jurisdiction and pur- chase controlled substances.” Wednesday's roundup began at the Double Duce game room on Carpenter Street, where manager Danny Durham Blanton, 51, of 127 McGinnis Street, was charged with pos- session with intent to sell and deliver Xanax; sale and delivery of Xanax; maintaining a busi- - * ness to sell controlled sub- stances; and 10 assorted gam- bling charges. Officers said nine video poker machines were confiscated, along with drug paraphernalia, a 1996 Thunderbird, records and ap- proximately $1,000. Blanton was jailed under a $10,000 se- cured bond. The roundup then made its way to numerous residences in Kings Mountain and Cleveland County. “We went to homes and start- ed picking up folks,” Proctor said. “Most of the buys were controlled buys on street deal- ers. It’s hard to do a search war- rant on their home when they're selling all over the place. About the only way you can get them is on undercover buys.” Proctor said many of the drug sales took place in and around apartments. Depending on their criminal history, Proctor said if convicted the suspects could get “inten- sive probation to 10 to 15 years or more.” While this put a dent in drug sales in Kings Mountain, Proctor said it’s part of an ongo- ing effort to rid the city of ille- gal drug sales. “We're going to continue do- ing things like this,” she said. “We're trying to send a message that we're not going to tolerate it. You can only get by with it for so long. Sooner or later we're going to catch them. “We hope this has opened their eyes,” she added. “If it hasn't they'll be the next one. We're not going to stop our in- vestigation just because people think theyre not hurting any- one but themselves.” Proctor said her department hears complaints everyday of drug sales and illegal gambling and their effect.on families. ; .: “Every one of these investiga- tions came from citizen com- | plaints,” she said. “One individ- ual came to the office and said their families are having to pay for this particular family mem- ber’s food bill because they‘re blowing it on video poker ma- chines.” Charges were alsofiled against the following; Larry Dale Willis, 44, 319 Gardner St., Shelby, trafficking in methamphetamine, $250,000 secured bond.
