Bad Moon Rising! Largest moon since 1866 : to. shine on December 22 Old Man Winter will be mak- ing his brightest entrance in 133 years on the evening of December 22. Ushering in the winter solstice that night will be the largest full moon to shine since the year 1866. - The reason the moon will be bright enough to make night seem like day takes a little bit of astronomical explaining. What will happen is that the full moon of the 22nd will occur in conjunction with the lunar perigee- the point where the moon is also closest to the earth in its orbit. This phenomenon will make an already full moon appear 14 percent larger than it normally would if it was in apogee- or at its farthest point from earth. Lig “Another factor that will come i=intovplay to make-the:moonts show even more spectacular is that the earth is several million miles closer to the sun during this time of year and light re- flected from the sun to the earth and then on to the moon will be seven percent stronger than normal. A combination of close perigee and above normal re- flected light will make the evening of December 22 one to remember. This will be a once in a lifetime event for everyone living now, because it won't happen again for 100 years. - Some scientists predict that if skies are clear, motorists will be able to drive without headlights. If all goes right weather-wise, there might even be enough light left a few days later to light the way for Santa Claus.
