January 6, 2000 Some KM numbers incorrect in Community Phone Book BY ALAN HODGE Staff Writer One little digit might not seem like it could create a lot of headaches with an entire phone exchange, but that’s what some folks in the Kings Mountain area are finding to be the case. The figure in question is the fact that Virginia-based ; DataNational, a publisher of independent telephone directo- ries called “The Community PhoneBook,” has accidentally listed all 739 Kings Mountain phone exchanges as 734 in the white pages of their 1999-2000 directory for Cleveland County. The result has some advertisers angry. “My husband Norman and I advertised our business, NES Electrical Service in the directo- ry,” said Christie Smith. “Later, I was looking for my cousin’s phone number in it and noticed ° the prefix 739 had been pub- lished as 734. I checked our ad in the white pages and found out it was wrong too.” Even though the yellow page section of the Community Directory has the correct num- bers, the white pages prefix problem might cause customers - *P to dial incorrectly, and cost sales, Smith believes. The glitch could also lead to an increase in wrong numbers and hang-ups. “People that have the 734 prefix have got to be getting more wrong calls,” Smith said. “They need to know why all those wrong numbers are com- - ing to their homes.” Smith also feels that the folks at DataNational’s New York of- fice have been less than up front about accepting responsibility for the errors. “We called them in October right after I discovered the phone numbers were wrong,” said Smith. “We told them in November as well. They said they weren't aware of any prob- lem.” Smith did say that last week she spoke to DataNational and they admitted the error. Bill Griffin, director of opera- tions at DataNational’s New York office offered this side of the story. “We had a case of human er- ror in the white pages of the Cleveland County directories,” Griffin said. “We apologize for any problems this may have caused.” *. Griffin said that DataNational would reprint the white pages -of the Cleveland County area directory and redistribute them . to customers. The glitch was ap- parently limited to phone num- bers in Kings Mountain. DataNational publishes and distributes over 10 million hone directories annually in about 140 different communi- ties all along the East coast. In addition to phone num- bers, the directories contain in- formation on subjects ranging from local elected officials, sports arenas, area codes, and area maps. DataNational’s ‘number is 1-888-677-2648.
