The biggest hurdle many
songwriters have to leap is get-
ting that first tune published.
Tunesmith Floyd Sanders of
Kings Mountain has not only
made the jump, he’s hit the
ground running with his new
song “Jesus is Coming.”
A retired textile worker, 63-
year-old Sanders has only been
writing songs professionally for
about two years, but the gift of
making up musical lyrics has
been in his system ever since he
can recall.
“The Lord gives me my inspi-
ration to write songs,” Sanders
says. “You can be riding down’
the road and get inspired.”
The type of tunes that
Sanders specializes in are good,
old-time Southern Gospel. So
far, he’s written five songs.
Besides the one that’s just out,
there are four more currently
being looked at by music com-
panies. “Jesus is Coming” is on
a cassette tape entitled “Gospel
Jubilee.” Put out by
Hollywood Stars Music produc-
tions, the tape contains 20
gospel tunes performed by
artists such as Stephanie Allen,
William LeBlanc, and Charlie
Clark.
Locally, Sanders works on his
music with Gary Lyon in the
Bethlehem community. A musi-
cian and producer, Lyon has a
recording studio near his home.

Sanders said. “We've been
friends for about three years
now.”
Sanders didn’t so much go
out looking for a publisher for
his tunes, the publisher came
looking for him. The call from
Hollywood Stars came after
Sanders had copyrighted his
song and had it filed with the
Library of Congress.
“The company has a person
who looks for new songs that
have just been copyrighted,”
said Sanders. “They contacted
me when they saw my work.”
For folks interested in getting
a career started in music,
Sanders offers the following ad-
vice.
“If you've got a song, get
someone to sing it in front of a
local church or other group.”
said Sanders. “If they like it,
it’s probably a good one.”
Since his second career has
gotten off to a hot start, Sanders
wants to see his artistic star
climb, even higher, His next goal
is to have a big name group or
singer like Dolly Parton pick
one of his tunes for perfor-
mance. Until that time, Sanders
just keeps on turnin’ out the
tunes.
“You never know when the
urge to write a song might hit,”
he says./“When it does, I just
grab a pen and paper and start
scribbling.”

A special day honoring Ollie Wheeler will be held January 9 at

Mrs. Wheeler has served the church faithfully for a number of
years. She was voted Woman of the Year by the Wesleyan Women’s
Society and has served as Sunday School teacher, church treasurer,
president of the Wesleyan Women, building committee member, the
local Board of Administration, and other offices of the church.
She has also served as a volunteer for the Kings Mountain
Hospital Auxiliary for a number of years.
Her friends are invited to help honor her at the 11 a.m. worship
service. Dinner will be served in the fellowship hall following the
service.
