Merger Meeting January 25 in Shelby By GARY:STEWART Editor;of The Herald The Kings Mountain Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. at Central School and one of the topics of discus- sion will be an upcoming meet- ing with the Board of Commissioners to discuss merging of the county’s three school systems. The commissioners have called a meeting of thecounty board and three school boards for Tuesday, Jan. 25.from 6-8 p.m. at Cleveland Community College to discuss the issue. The meeting is open to the public but will be a dialogue for mem- bers of the four boards and will not include questions from the audience. _ Superintendents of the coun- ty’s three school systems met ‘with County Manager Lane Alexander Wednesday morning to form an agenda for the meet- ing. Richard Schwartz, an attor- ney from Raleigh who was hired by Kings Mountain Schools to represent them in an attempt to head off a merger, al- so attended the meeting. . Schwartz met with the Kings Mountain School Board in a special session Wednesday af- ternoon and told board mem- bers that he had been assured by Cleveland County officials and their lawyer that merger is ‘not a “done deal.” __ Kings Mountain school offi- cials say they hope the January meeting will be more organized than a meeting they held with commissioners in December. In that meeting there was no for- mal agenda, and after setting the date for another meeting in January the county commis- sioners voted to hire a lawyer to represent them in their merger ‘assessment. That prompted the Kings Mountain School Board to hire an attorney, also. The county commissioner’s : 3 lawyer, Gil Middlebrooks, has “been gathering information ~frem all three school systems since that time. He will review that information at the January -25 meeting. The commissioners + willdiscuss why they are con- sidering merger, and the school systems will be allowed to have ‘staff available to answer any ‘questions the commissioners have. Kings Mountain School Board member Ronnie Hawkins, who has been a vocal opponent of merger and who recently filed for this year’s county commissioners’ race, said he hopes the meeting will be positive and will be a first See Merger, 3A -Disaster Pastors There will be a meeting of the Disaster Pastors on Thursday, January 13, at 1 am until noon at 100 Justice Place, Room 104D located in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center.
