During the 1999 legislative . session, Dalton, vice chairman of the Senate's judiciary com- mittee, pushed through several initiatives to help protect chil- dren, families, and communi- ties, including: School safety initiatives in- cluding tougher penalties - such as mandatory suspension and driver’s license revocation- for students who engage in vio- lence, make a bomb threat or bring weapons to school or school-related events; more stu- dent resource officers in schools; protections for school volunteers; and after school ac- tivities and student prevention efforts. The Safe Families Act to crack down on domestic violence by expanding police abilities to re- spond to calls and make arrests, making it easer to track stalkers and batterers, and providing more help for abuse victims. Juvenile justice programs to provide swift, sure punishment for offenders and more commu- nity based rehabilitation and prevention programs. Help for crime victims with more district attorneys, investi- gators and support staff; victim witness assistance; assistance pilot programs and new Victims Assistance Network services. Dalton, who won the same award for 1997, also worked to make sure the Cleveland Correctional Center remained open, strengthened penalties for oral or written threats against children and spouses, and sup- ported tougher drunk driving laws and truck safety laws. KM Military Park develops fire plan Kings Mountain National Military Park superintendent Erin Broadbent recently an- nounced that the park is in the final approval stages for the park’s new Fire Management Plan. As in many other federal and state agencies, the plan call . Park Rangers emphasize the implementation of prescribed fire in no way impacts the park’s wildfire program. All wildfires will be suppressed and the park will continue all pre-suppression activities dur- ing periods of of extreme fire for the implementation of a pre- ' danger. The park staff has be- scribed fire program to assist managers in forest protection and cultural landscape restora- tion. The need for the plan was identified in 1996 after a vascu- lar plant study indicated that the heavy fuel layer was con- tributing to the decline in the park’s biodiversity, Recently, a cultural landscape report fur- ther supported the use of fire as management tool to aids in the restoration of the cultural land- scape. Hunt is the grandson of Clifford G. and Elaine Hunt of 3802 Towery Road, Lattimore, N.C., and a graduate of Crest High School. Army Staff Sgt. Rodney Arrowood has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal.
