In addition to his duties as minister of music at First Baptist
ALAN HODGE/THE HERALD
Church in Kings Mountain, Morris Jordan is also a member of
the internationally known vocal group The Centurymen.
Jordan has traveled to several foreign countries including
China with The Centurymen.
Jordan, Centurymen
in running for Grammy
BY ALAN HODGE
Staff Writer
Cleveland County is a long
way from China, but the
Christian message delivered by
First Baptist Church of Kings
Mountain minister of music
Morris Jordan and The
Centurymen vocal group he’s a
part of knows no boundaries.
Now in their 31st year, and
100 members strorig, The
Centurymen have not only
toured China, but much of the
nation and world. The group's
success has not gone unnoticed,
because Jordan and his fellow
Centuryineéri-are up fot' a’
Grammy Award at this year’s
February 23 presentation cere-
monies.
“I grew up in a singing fami-
ly down in Crossville,
Alabama,” Jordan said. “My fa-
ther led the church singers and I
soon felt the call to the music
ministry.”
Following graduation from
Carson-Newman College in
Jefferson City, Tennessee,
Jordan came to North Carolina
in 1961 and went to work at
Dover Baptist Church in Shelby.
After about five years at Dover
Baptist, Jordan moved to the
Tar Heel coast and took over
the music at First Baptist
Church of New Bern. After a
stint in New Bern, Jordan once
again traversed the state to
Canton, N.C. After 17 years in
Canton, Jordan finally came to
Kings Mountain in 1987.
It was during his stay at First
Baptist in Canton that Jordan's
pastor Jim Langford heard
Kings Mountain students
about the Genturymen. With
Langford’s encouragement,
Jordan tried out for the group
and was accepted in 1972.
“The Centurymen are a very
unique group,” Jordan says.
“All members are male minis-
ters of music. People who come
to see a show are generally
bowled over by the sound of
100 men singing.”
The Century men sing an
eclectic mix of old and new
songs with Christian themes.
Some of the tunes are classic
hymns, others are modern ar-
rangements. The group has
recorded 20 albums, including
their latest CD release and
Grammy nominee “Beautiful
Star.”
“Being part of The
Centurymen has been a min-
istry-changing event for me,”
Jordan said. “It has opened my
eyes to the variety in Christian
music. It has made me a more
versatile musician.”
Even though they hold full
time jobs as ministers of music
at their respective congrega-
tions, The Centurymen still find
time to travel and perform.
Nations visited by the group in-
clude Russia, Spain, Israel,
Brazil, and China.
“I've gone to China twice
with The Centurymen,” Jordan
said. “We were the first group
to sing Christian hymns on
Chinese television.”
Whether he’s at his post at
First Baptist in Kings Mountain,
or jetting off to some foreign
land or state with The
Centurymen, Jordan is a living
example of the proverb “Make a
joyful noise unto the Lord.”
