Shelby man faces child abuse charge The Cleveland County Sheriffs Department has charged Johnson Wayne Carroll, 25, of 1442 lot #30, Arlee Drive, Shelby, with one count of felony child abuse. The alleged incident occurred at Carroll's residence on February 29. The alleged victim is a two-mont-old child. According to Sgt. Bobby Steen of the Cleveland County sheriff’s Department, the child sustained a broken left clavicle and hemorrhaging to the eyes. Carroll was jailed under a $20,000 secured bond. Also help- ing with the program was sec- ond grade teacher Cathy Crawford. For her performance, Key told the students the life story of Dr. Seuss and read selections from “Green Eggs and Ham.” Each student received an activi-: ty book and book markers from the Communities in Schools program. Good things to eat were much in evidence during Dr. Seuss Day. Parents contributed cupcakes, drinks, and chips for the students. Green eggs and ham were also on the lunch menu at East Elementary. Born Theodore Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904, Dr Seuss is one of the most famous authors of children’s literature. He won the Pulitzer prize for his work in 1984 and two' Academy Awards. He wrote and illustrat- ed 44 books before his death in. 1991. ‘retired from Bennett Brick and Tile after 40 years of service. He was a member of Boyce Memorial ARP Church where he served as Elder and Chairman of the Building Committee for the Sanctuary. He is survived by his wife Rachel McClain Goforth of Kings Mountain; daughters Del Goforth Tieman and husband Glen of Madison, Alabama, Susan Goforth of Kings Mountain, and Carol Denton and husband Googie of Kings Mountain; brothers Rob L. Goforth of Kings Mountain and Tom Goforth of Vassar, Michigan; sister Mae Sue Goforth McGill of Kings Mountain; grandchildren Erin ‘Smith and husband Pete of Knoxville, Tenn., Ada Tieman of Madison, Zachary Tieman of Madison, Will Denton of Kings Mountain, Sally Denton of Kings Mountain. A memorial service was held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Boyce Memorial ARP Church by the Rev. Doug Peterson. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. S.C.- James Edward Crook, 72, 112 Sunset Drive, died February 29, 2000 at ~ Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was the husband of Nellie Crocker Crook and the son of the late John and Gertrude Bratton Crook, Sr. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He seryed in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during World War IT and Korea. In addition to his wife, he is stirvived by-his;son Ronald E. * Crook of Blacksburg; daughters Julie E. Crook and Deborah A.
