The bride-to-be is a 1985 graduate of New Hanover High School, Wilmington. She is em- ployed with Brunswick-Cove Nursing Home. The bridegroom-to-be is a 1985 graduate of New Hanover High School, Wilmington. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1985-1993 and is employed with the City of Wilmington. The bridegroom-to-be’s mother is a native of Kings Mountain. She is a 1965 graduate of Kings Mountain High School and attended Oakview Baptist Church. He is the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bumgardner of Kings Mountain. CLUBS Local music Over 500 area music students participated in the recent N.EM.C. Junior Music Festival in Gastonia. The festival is held in cities throughout the U.S. and is open to students under the age of 18. Seven members of the Young Artist Junior Music Club, stu- dents of Mrs. Marshall Gore, earned top ratings of superior in the piano division. They included Lacey Beam, Matt Echols, Stephanie Echols, Kirsten Martin, Cesar Padilla, Heather Wilson, and April Wright. | Consecutive rat- ings of superior were awarded to Kirsten MATT ECHOLS Martin (2), Cesar Padilla (3), Heather Wilson and April Wright (4), Stephanie Echols (7), and Matt Echols (9). Matt Echols, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Echols of Kings Mountain, won the large 45-point Gold Cup for his performance of Toccata Brillante by Alexander, and Musette in D by Bach. He was al- so presented the Green Certificate of National Honor for earning nine consecutive superior rat- ings. He won the 35-point Gold Cup and Red Certificate of National Honor in 1997, and the 15- point Gold Cup and Gold Certificate of National Honor in 1994. He presently holds nine certifi- . cates of National Honor. Matt has won 14 Certificates of Musical Achievement, Piano Honor Pin in 1993, the Gold Performance Pin in 1994, and the Gold and Onyx Pin in 1997. In 1994 he was selected Piano Student of the Year. In 1995 he won the Repertoire Trophy for memorizing 80 compositions, and 1996 was designated Young Artist Most Outstanding Performer. He continued to win Golden Note tro- phies for Classical Piano, Contemporary Piano, Keyboard Technique. In nine years of study he was won three Golden Note Trophies for practice, three for Performance and three for Theory and KMWC for half a century. He has earned five trophies in the Junior Composer contest for original composi- tions: 1993 “The Zoo,: 1994 “The Storm,” 1995 “Mysteries,” 1996 “Spirit of the Mountain,” and 1998 “Jazz Variations.” He is also a candidate for the Junior Composer 2000 contest. In 1993 Matt won the first division West School and the Kiwanis talent shows with “The Great Smoky Mountains” by Glover. He won both tal- ent shows again in 1994 in the second division with the “Piano Concerto in A Minor” by Grieg. In 1996 he won the 39th and final Kiwanis Talent Show with his performance of Franz Liszt's “Hungarian Rhapsodie #2.” He plays the piano in area churches, other community functions, and has played for several weddings. He was presented the Gold Certificate of National Honor for three consecutive superior ratings. He has won three Certificates of National Honor. Cesar holds four certificates of musical achieve- ment and the gold piano pin for performance. In 1997 he was awarded the Golden Note Trophy for ‘Repertoire for the most compositions memorized in one year. In 1998 he was presented with the American Folk Song Award and won the Golden Note Trophy for Hymn Playing and Accompaniment. In 1999 his original composition of “Raindrops” won the Junior Composer Trophy for Young Musicians, He also won the 1999 Golden Note Trophy for practice. He is a year 2000 candidate for the Golden Note Trophy for Keyboard Techniques and for Music Theory.
