Sa sp a pe og a Al Ar GQ A Page 7A Rabies Awareness Day set Governor Jim Hunt is declar- ing April 15 as Rabies Awareness Day in North Carolina. Rabies is a deadly viral dis- ease that affects animals and people. Rabies is spread most commonly by skunks, raccoons, foxes and bats. Over 1000 cases of rabies have been reported over the last three years in North Carolina alone. This dis- ease is spread by saliva from an infected animal and attacks the brain and central nervous sys- tem of the animal or person. Almost all animals infected by the rabies virus ultimately die. While the virus is of major concern in dogs, cats, and wildlife, rabies can also infect people. If a person is bitten by a rabid animal and does not seek treatment, the result is most likely death. A bite wound from an animal should be scrubbed vigorously, reported to Animal Control to capture the animal for rabies testing, and the per- A son should seek medical atten- tion. If the animal is found to be rabid, the person bitten will have to undergo a series of in- jections to avoid disease. The public should be aware to never approach a raccoon, skunk, fox or bat exhibiting un- usual behavior. For example, raccoons are active usually at night and tend to shy away from people. If a raccoon is spotted in daylight and seems overly friendly or aggressive, the animal should be reported to animal control for possible capture. In North Carolina, if a pet does not have a current rabies shot and is exposed to a rabid animal, the pet must be eutha- nized or quarantined for six months at the owners expense. State law requires that all dogs and cats over four months of age receive rabies shots. To avoid losing a pet that may have been exposed to rabies, the public is urged to have their pets vaccinated. Contact either your local veterinarian or ani- mal control office to find out where these shots will be given and/or to get more information about rabies. In Cleveland County there have been 34 cases of rabies since June, 1998. “We've had a variety of ani- mals with rabies come into con- tact with pets and people,” said Linda Belk of the Cleveland County Animal Control. In 1998 in Cleveland County, there was one fox, one raccoon, and two skunks reported with rabies. Last year saw 11 rac- coon, nine skunks, one fox, and one coyote reported in he coun- ty with rabies. So far in 2000, there has been one horse, four raccoon, and three skunks re- ported. “Several people who came in- to contact with these animals had to be treated with vaccine,” Belk said. 1 MLC (Ld Ta o KEETER FORD OF CHERRYVILLE * KEETER FORD OF CHERRYVILLE * KEETER FORD OF CHERRYVILLE ° 97 Ford Probe 2Dr., 98 Ford Mustang LX, 98 Ford Mustang LX, 93 Ford F350 Ext.
